Drexel, right? You only have 1500 characters. Because the question is asking you pretty directly for information, I would avoid reflecting too much past what you actually did to ameliorate the situation. The question already assumes that you were acting under unideal circumstances (extenuating), so I don't think you need to apologize and smooth over something that wasn't under your control in the first place.

What do we need to know to put your record in context. If you lost your house in a wildfire, or had to relocate due to flooding, or whatever else might have happened on a large scale or small, just tell us about it so we understand why you had a gap in your activities. We aren't asking what you learned, just trying to understand why you didn't work or volunteer for 3 months.... because you were in a coma after a car wreck.
