Hey guys, so I had a question about academic dismissal. How do medical schools find out you are academically dismissed from a major? My school has a stupid rule that if you get 3 or more C- than you are academically dismissed from your major. But reapplication is easy and they will let you in. I got dismissed but I do not want to reapply. Instead I want to do a interdisciplinary study in bio and psych. What do you guys think?

I've never ever heard of that. The only way I can imagine is if you have an academic IA placed on your transcript. But I don't think that this is the case. I've seen plenty of people who bombed their major classes (like, say music, neuroscience or biochem) but had stellar grades in other subjects and a fine GPA.

Remember, we don't care what your major is, only that you do well, period.

Kicking you out of a major isn't the same as being kicked out of the college.

What if you get academic dismissal and do get kicked out of college but retake all the classes and get a really good GPA after that? Could you still get into DO schools with a competitive MCAT and GPA?

Yes. I have student to whom this has happened.

DO schools, more than MD schools, reward reinvention when you provide proof that the you of now is not the you of then.

DO schools will look to see if you have improved, if you do it will work in your favor. MD schools are very strict about GPAs, having a C- minus on your transcript will kill your chances at an MD school.

I would work hard and try to improve the GPA if I were you your position. As I said with DO schools they are more forgiving but MD schools are not.

In reality, a few poor grades aren't going to kill anyone for an MD school, expect maybe in a pre-req, when B or higher is a requirement.

You can be expected to be asked about them, though, at interviews.

I understand what you are saying Goro. I'm mainly applying to DO schools but I just wanted your guys opinion. My GPA has dramatically went up since then because I retook some classes, and excelled in others. Thanks guys.

By the way... My school is a small liberal arts college and they have strict rules... I guess just because they wanna build a name for themselves...

I know that at least one UC school does this for some of their science majors as well as requiring them to meet a well-above average GPA requirement in order to declare those majors in the first place. It's a ridiculous policy and pushes out STEM students.

If your GPA is decent and the rest of your application is good then you're fine, as Goro said.
