Hello, thank you for reading this, and I would appreciate any advice on my situation. Please be honest; I understand I have messed up. I have received two academic violations in my undergrad at UIUC. I majored in Bioengineering. The first was an introductory CS class where I had sent my code to a friend, and they copied it. I understand I am at fault, and this happened my Freshman year of college. I was extremely careful after this and never shared my work moving forward. However, my senior year, my bioengineering professor made an allegation that I copied code from previous homework. We were allowed to collaborate, and I had asked my friend for help, and she sent me her code to see where I went wrong. I sent this and my own code, which did not match in the slightest, but the violation was upheld. I have a 2.9 SGPA, 3.1 overall, and I am currently taking classes at the community college and later at a state college to raise this. I am also planning on doing an SMP program and getting some volunteer and clinical hours in the next 1-2 years. I know my application is already going to be hard because of my gpa but I am really worried about the two violations, as I know it looks like I did not learn my lesson and just continued to cheat. The first sanction was a drop in letter grade in the CS class, and the second was a 0 on the homework assignment. Neither is on my transcript, but I believe they are in my internal records.

I think they are documented at the student conduct office, and records are retained for 6 years. The second violation put me on conduct probation, which was removed after graduation, but I am sure they are in those records. Basically, if requested, my school will release the records that show the two violations, what they consisted of, and the sanction.

First of all, from your description it does not sound like you collaborated on the assignment in your senior year—you cheated. Your classmate gave you their answer and you used that to solve the problem. The fact that the answers weren’t exactly the same is immaterial. The fact that you did this after a prior IA for a similar issue makes this a pattern, and if I were to review your application I would assume you likely did it other times where you were not caught. This may or may not be true, but given that your GPA is already not competitive… frankly I do not see any reason to believe you will be admitted to a med school over other candidates with higher stats who have not gotten two IAs.

My advice is to find a different career path. But if you’re not ready for that advice, then concretely what is your argument for why you should expect you’ll have a successful SMP given your academic track record? What will you do differently that will lead to a better result?
