Academic Neuro - Which program?

My friend wants to enter academic neurology. Is it okay for her to enter a community based neurology residency and then take on good fellowship later? Or will going to such a neuro residency kill her chances of making it in academic neuro?

It won't kill her chances, but she'd have to be a rock star at the community program and probably publish a couple of papers during residency. Thankfully not everyone does a fellowship, so getting a good fellowship spot is not as competitive as it seems when you start residency.

Depending on which field she wants to do a fellowship in, she may not need to be a rock star. Some Neurology fellowships are not very competitive at all, even at big institutions. Others are pretty competitive. If she chooses to do interventional she may have a tougher time finding a fellowship than if she chooses cognitive.
