hey everyone. was just wondering...I've heard these days that its nearly impossible to be a great basic researcher AND a great clinician (esp. surgeon).

However, is it possible to be a top clinical researcher AND a top clinician (ie neurosurgeon getting supercomplicated cases/peers considering he/she is best in his/her subspecialty)? I realize that the physician would need to sacrifice some skills in certain aspects of his/her specialty, but breadth isnt exactly what i mean by top clinician.
