Does anyone have a general idea about the salary discrepancies between the two? I know that it's less in academics, but what constitutes less? What would you make coming out of fellowship?

No way to answer your question. What fellowship are you talking about? Lots of different fields too.

It sounds like you're concerned about money, which would come easier in private practice.

To give you an idea (albeit perhaps an extreme example), academic general surgeons at Mass General are starting at 80k per year.

Depends on the specialty, fellowship and location. Niner's example is extreme on the bad side. I think generally an academic clinical faculty makes in the range of 60-75% as much as the average private guy in the field, but it varies a lot.

There is a yearly academic salary survey by specialty, region and academic rank. I think it's by AAMC. You should be able to see it, if you ask your chair or dean nicely.

Actually, I'm leaning towards academics, heart failure/transplant in particular, and just wanted a general idea of what to potentially expect.

I've seen tons of threads about this on SDN, most people tend to say its between 100-120k on average. Of course this is dependent on specialty. Private practice depends on what field once again, location of practice, and setup. If they look hard enough, even Neurologists can make low 200's right out of training (private) vs 110-120 for academic. I talked to someone finishing IM who took a position for $180,000... although this is on the high side of what most new IMs will make from what he told me. Academic would likely be 100k or so.
