Dear students:
If you're on this thread, I don't have to tell you what an exciting path it is to becoming a physician- or clinician-scientist. Whether you're an MD or DO with strong research interests or a combined-degree student working for a PhD, MPH, MSCE, MTR or the like, you will all become a part of the biomedical research community. But you will do so as a physician. And of course, that poses both interesting opportunities and difficult challenges.
To better navigate your years ahead, I would encourage all of you to consider joining the American Physician Scientists Association (http://www.physicianscientists.org/) as it is dedicated to supporting the education and training of students just like you. It was built from the ground up by students (founded by Freddy Nguyen, one of the forum moderators) for students and will only be as good as the members make it.
Our flagship event is an annual meeting (held jointly with ASCI/AAP) in Chicago. This year, it will be April 23-25 and feature the Directors of the NIH and NCI along with several Nobel Laureates. Importantly, it is a time for you to share your ideas and work with other like-minded students and potential mentors in a wide-based academic forum.
I hope to see you at a meeting soon.
