A question for you folks out there.... Have any of you (or neurologists you know) gone in to private practice and then successfully transitioned back to academics? This of course assumes that even while you were in private practice, you tried to keep up with the literature in your niche area of research interest and perhaps had ties with local academicians. The reason I ask is for purely $ - I actually am not a fan of private practice [for me], but might need to for a couple of years to get a handle on loans. I understand that this is probably more difficult for basic science-oriented work than clinical.

I don't know her personally, but one Dr. Cherdak is mentioned in this article in the AAN's Neurology Today from May 20 2010. She went from private practice in Nashville to being an assistant professor at Vanderbilt.

Thanks for the link. The first 2 snippets were so depressing that I didn't almost make it past 'em. :scared:

Just a thought - esp if you're interested in academics, there are several routes via NIH that offers loan repayment - this is prefect for the academics! I'm not there yet, but looked into it a bit and looks like something feasible. I'm sure that there are other grant/loan repayment programs out there as well. I'd check into them before signing into private practice then trying to jump back into academics.
Just a thought.
