I recently tried to prescribe Acamprosate for a patient and the pharmacist told me it just isn’t available because the manufacturers stopped making it. Does anyone know the story here? Is this medicine just gone or is it a matter of cleaning up the factory so it can pass the inspection?

It does show up on the FDA shortage list. Two of the three generic companies manufacturing it have ceased production for now, Mylan seems to still be doing this. The fact that two different manufacturers have stopped suggests something more than a single failed inspection. CostPlus still has acamprosate on their list, they might be a good source for obtaining it for folks who need it.

I have AUD patients having shortages for Naltrexone and Antabuse, too. Now if you are saying campral also... great, so much for pharmacotherapy for AUD.

3 meds for AUD with very high NNT, and then you have shortages of them.

Seems like alcohol is winning the battle.
