Hey guys, I asked a professor for a physical copy of a LOR in a sealed envelope just in case I might need to send it into some schools manually. Is this overkill?

What schools need you to send it manually? And can't you just give instructions to your letter writer with the school and address if it needs to be sent manually? I think that way would be better so that the letter writer is not worried about you reading it or anything.

You wouldn't need that and even if a school does ask for it, you could just ask your professor to send it directly to the school when they ask.

It's better if you didn't touch it; otherwise it looks shady.

If they find out that YOU sent the letter, all confidentiality will be lost.

Why is there confidentiality? Just curious
Also what professors would write not good things? Doesn't it help the college to send more students to grad school?

To avoid all this dilemma, and still have the letter in your "possession", I would tell the professor to send the letter to Interfolio. That way you're the one in control, but the letter remains confidential throughout the whole process.

To conclude this story- I told my prof to ditch the physical and just do interfolio. I don't want it to look shady and if there is any reason for me to send one in physically, i'll just have him send it.

Interfolio will send physical copies
