Hi,

I am a post bac who, once upon a time, was a really crummy student, but has since gone back to school and gotten 2 years of a 3.96/4.0 GPA in lower and upper level sciences. DAT 20AA, 20TS, 19PAT

I was wondering what your thoughts are on the acceptance of older students, especially having done much better later on in life. I'm 26 now, married, and focused. I know average acceptances for older students has gone up in recent years too for career changers.

Thanks.

Average age of incoming DS1's is 24, so you're not far off at all. I wouldn't worry about it.

I am 27 married with children, two interviews.. There is a major difference in maturity level of someone in there late 20's compared to early 20's. I think adcomms recognize this... I am glad I experienced the school of hard knocks before I decided on a career.. Good Luck old Farts..

I think it is viewed positively by ADCOMS. First of all, making the decision to go back proves your dedication to dentistry. Also, you probably have a better idea of what you want in a career now (I know I do now, at age 24). They are looking for maturity and older students have that advantage. And furthermore, you have had life experiences by being "out in the real world" which should help. Your DATs are good and with the improvement in GPA, I think you have a good chance!!

As a nontrad that is slightly older than you, I think dental schools do not put you in a disadv compared to other applicants. I do agree that the additional life experiences and maturity would be viewed positively by dental schools

Thanks for the encouragement. It's a little hard to know how to feel as SDN tends to grasp the most fervent applicants.

I'm also a non-trad, 29, 2 kids, etc. Personally, I think I'm in a better position that someone who entered college fresh out of high school and is only 22-23 entering dental school.

35 with 4 chaps here, hoping the age factor is a positive one

33 here. getting better with age ( except for my knees ) 😉 When I asked San Antonio about this they publicly stated that there was no age discrimination. When I talked to D4's they said that the majority of their class was married with kids.
GO OLDIES 🙂
