I recieved an acceptance to KU today!!! Now I've got to decide between KCUMB and KU. I was trying so hard not to make my decision on MD vs DO
but now that I've been accepted to KU... its difficult to not think of the difficulty I might have getting matched in a residency should I go DO. (I think I'll end up in primary care, but may decide to do reconstructive surgery).

Congrats, noelle. One other thing to consider is that it's probably a lot cheaper to go to your state school than it will be to go to KCUMB. But you're going to be a doctor either way you decide. Great job! 😀

I wish I was a Kansas resident. Funny thing is, I got a rejection from my state school and got an acceptance from a different state school. Apparently there is a large difference between having a bad interview (Mizzou) and a good interview (KU). And for me the difference was in the interviewer.

As long as you do WELL in medical school (DO or MD), you can do any specialty that interests you. Do not buy into the myth that DO graduates cannot get into surgical or any other specialties. Go to the medical school where you are the most comfortable and can do your best work. In 2006, DO versus MD argument is useless and outdated.

There were plenty of unmatched MD graduates this year who were trying to get into General Surgery (one categorical slot open after the Match) and plenty of DO grads who DID match into General Surgery. Go where you think you can get the best grades and are most comfortable.

I just wanted to thank you for offering your opinion/wisdom regarding MD/DO opportunities. Many of us feel that if we go DO, our opportunities will be much fewer than those who have gone MD. I do plan to apply for both MD and DO, but based on what I know thus far I believe that I'd rather go DO even if I were accepted to an MD school. It seems that the line between the two becomes less prominent over time, and hearing comments from someone in the field validates this.

The OP is facing the exact "Problem" I wouldn't mind having by this time next year!

I go to visit KCUMB on Friday evening for a tour and informational session...and I'm trying to find out if KU does anything similar...I know MU does not.

I just wanted to 2nd this. You are in a great position to pick the best school for you. Definitely don't let this be an MD vs Do thing. If you work hard, get good grades, good board scores, good LOR's, etc. it's not going to matter what your initials are. Which ever school you felt most comfortable at, and you feel you can spend the next 4 years, should be the school you pick. 🙂

Regardless of which school you choose I'm sure you can rest assured that you'll get solid clinical training with many opportunities for the future.
