Accepted at AZCOM,waitlisted at DUM and CCOM...need advice

So here's the deal. I just got my waitlist letter today from CCOM which I really wanted to attend. I'm also waitlisted at DMU which I really liked. Last month I was accepted at AZCOM which seemed really nice, but I'm concerned about the clinical rotations there. My initial deposit is due Dec 15th at AZCOM, then the second (the big one) on March 15th. I'm a little unsure whether to hold my spot at AZCOM and then eat some of the deposit money if CCOM or DMU pulls me off the waitlist. Honestly I would rather be in AZ during my first two years. It's just that I've heard so many complaints about the rotations at AZCOM that I begin to wonder if it is worth the high tuition. If anyone is in a similar predicament or has any advice on the matter I would really appreciated it.

You probably will get off the waitlist, but I'd probably play it safe and put down my deposit if I were you--unless you get off the waitlist before your deadline. A waitlist is not equal to an acceptance. Just my two cents.

I agree, put the money down and make sure you will be in school next year.

It's unfortunate, but I would put the deposit for AZCOM. At least you will have a place to go that you secured if things don't work out. You could keep informing those schools that you are very interested, and you might be able to get off the wait list sooner.

Everyone has already given you the same advice...but here's one more. Absolutely secure your spot. You may very well get off the waitlist, but there is no guarantee. And considering how much you will spend on your medical education, eating the cost of the deposit is well worth the peace of mind knowing there is a place for you come August.

It sounds like you really liked AZCOM. I know of lots of people that chose to go there and they love it. I have also heard that the rotations aren't that bad anymore.

I'm thinking that by the time I do rotations, there will probably be alot more options and from looking at the recent match lists AZCOM looks great. Plus I'd rather be in AZ than IA or IL. Thanks for everyone's advice.

What were your credentials for a waitlist at CCOM and DMU if you don't mind me asking?

I understand completely. I was accepted to Western COMP and waitlisted at DMU (where I would love to go). I am thinking I won't put down the deposit at Western at this time and may regret it later but I just can't see myself there. It's frustrating that the places you want to go don't want you at this time and the places you don't want to go want you. Never thought I would be complaining about this but I am in the same situation and understand completely.

Man those are damn good stats. I wonder why you weren't accepted at CCOM, how did the interview go and did you have good extracurriculars?

I was hoping on getting in wtih a 3.9 gpa and a 24 mcat but your experience is sort of making me doubt that it will happen.

Don't doubt, something wierd must have happened with his app, or maybe the interviewer took a disliking to one of his answers. Your stats are good, don't worry, assuming you have some ECs.

Personally I thought my interview went pretty well. The professor in the panel did ask me about EC's during my undergrad and I explained that I didn't do many at that time because of a big course load and working almost full time and then filled them in on more recent activities. And when they asked me about a difficult situation I had gone through and how I dealth with it, I gave them a kind of unorthodox answer. I told them about when I was pick-pocketed on a six month trip to Africa and how I dealt with the stress of losing almost everything while in a foreign country. Who knows, maybe they were looking for something more related to academics or medicine. My thought was that most of the other applicants would answer with something related to those things whereas I felt that I should talk about a situation that is different from the usual variety. Maybe that didn't show them committment to medicine or something like that.

Yeah, I recently gave an unorthodox answer as well. I got called back to do a third interview at the school because of the discrepancy between my first two interview scores. In my third interview, I really stuck to the books, and I ended up getting accepted. You just never know how you do on those interviews, but if you have an uneasy feeling on a particular answer you gave, chances are it wasn't the best answer and that it could count against you. Everytime I have had that feeling, I have been right. Although granted, I've only attended 5 medical school interviews so far.

I too would put down the deposit at AZCOM and then see what develops. A bird in the hand is what you want to hang on to and letting a firm admission go for what may or may not happen isn't a good move. Whatever problems AZCOM students may or may not have getting rotations, they are certainly less than the problems someone who wasn't in medical school would have getting rotations. 🙂

Yeah, but this was at an allo school 🙄 So I learned its better to stick to orthodox in certain situations

Dont didle around and not pay your deposit. You might not get off the waitlist. You dont want to be stuck with no place to go next year. If you do get off the wait list at your #1 school, bite the 1500 bucks and go to your first choice school. 1500 bucks sounds like a lot to walk away form now but it is childs play compared to what you're going to owe once you finish med school.

Ditto what babyruth said, I like unorthodox anwsers. We have one guy who's a first year now, when I interviewd this guy I asked this guy what he did for fun in undergrad. He said that every summer he used to go to Orlando and play Goofy just for ****s and giggles. Man I really loved that.
