Accepted at the interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know a person who got an acceptance while at the airport ~3hr post interview

Columbia has second interviews for a select few waitlists applicants with the dean and some of them are given acceptances off the waitlist on the spot.

I got an informal "I'm sure we'll be seeing you in the fall" as I was leaving one interview. Got an acceptance to that school two weeks later after the next adcom meeting.

Was told I had a position waiting for me in the interviewers research lab if I wanted it when I started in the Fall. Told me some good places to live when I moved here and wanted me to email him throughout the year to let him know how I was doing. Waitlisted. Maybe if the interviewer sits on the ad com directly this would have more weight. Otherwise a lot of interviewers fill out a form and send it in and it's out of their hands at that point.

Not in med but for dent I got accepted day after less than 24 hours

Euphoria.

I've heard that a couple schools (essentially) accept a couple stand-out students pre-interview. As in: if you show up for interview you are accepted.

However, you won't be notified of your acceptance until days (or weeks) later.

It's not as though you can show up and get your acceptance letter before you leave the building.

The interviewer(s) may accept you, but the Adcom and maybe the Dean him/herself has to do the actual accepting. At my schools we're strictly coached not to give away our decisions or make comments that might otherwise unrealistically get an interviewee's hopes up. There have been instances where the Dean has downgraded a committee's decision to accept to wait list. That's because Deans have their own prerogatives that sometimes work sideways to those of the AdCom.

If you get positive signs or comments from an interviewer, they're just being polite.

I will reject people in the interview room (it actually takes some talent to get rejected outright). But with most people I see, my decision to accept will be made by the time I get back to my office.

Has this ever happened?

Winking just makes everything seem 10 times creepier to me.

if you were accepted at your interview, congrats!!!

A couple of interviewers have told me "you will be accepted here," "see you at revisit weekend," "I think you will be a great fit at this school" and they all ended up turning into waitlists so I think there are other factors that matter more than interviews.

Wow that sucks, why would they play with your emotions like that

An interviewer told me to expect to be accepted. Wait list at that school. lol

One interviewer told me I'd be a really good fit for the school, and I was rejected outright. Such a strange process hah

Doesn't the Univ. of Michigan sometimes accept kids on their interview day? Thought I saw a Twitter pic about it on their feed.

Edit: Apparently not.

what a peculiar thing to do if true: "Look at these happy people: they were accepted immediately upon interviewing . . . (but you probably weren't!)"

I got this in a post-interview phone interview. Got an acceptance 2 weeks later.

when i interviewed for the school i ended up at, the faculty member i interviewed with told me straight out he is recommending acceptance. but it was a two interview system so i didn't know how much that meant except that 1 person out of 2 liked me for sure

I had an interview with the Dean at one school and at the end of the interview he said he thinks that I will receive a lot of acceptances this year and that he hopes I choose to attend his school. I was accepted weeks later.

A few years ago, I had a very close friend who was offered a full ride scholarship at a school while at an interview, but they had to commit to going to that school that day. Weird stuff.

No they declined the offer. It was early in the interview season and they anticipated getting accepted into better schools (school was a top 50). They ended up receiving a full tuition scholarship to a top 5 medical school when it was all said and done.

For one school, I was rejected after 2 open file interviews with unsolicited feedback very similar to what you describe. It's very random with some luck involved.

No, we get "invited" by U of M if you are an undergrad at U of M to come to the office to discuss an "issue" with your application. It is usually the morning of the acceptance. Told to meet with the Director at 11:00 AM (decisions come out at noon). They personally hand you your acceptance letter, then take a picture of you holding it. Never an acceptance on interview day to my knowledge, as all needs to go through U of M Adcom first.

I was interviewed by the Dean at a school (not the one I attended) and was told that I was accepted, etc. Accepted a week later via mail. Does it happen, yes. Do I believe anything until it is on paper, no.

This.

I have a relative who was accepted at his interview (gave him a signed letter and everything), but this was over 30 years ago. Funny story, this guy didn't even know what his MCAT score was, and only applied to his undergrad's medical school (because he was too lazy to mail out the other applications). He literally wouldn't believe how competitive it's gotten when I told him about my cycle.

Lol, any time an "older" doctor give me advice about medical school admission i just ignore it. But i do listen to them when they talk about job happiness and patient care.

Old Doc: "Back on my day, we had to type our personal statements ON A TYPEWRITER. And we had to address our letters BY HAND. You little whippersnappers today have it easy."

After traveling all over the southeast for interviews this year, I am fairly certain the decision is 80% made by the time you get there. The med student who gave our tour said to us " I feel really good about this group I can see all of you here" all 7 people from that interview day were accepted.

several years ago, I had a very outstanding student (like 36+ MCAT, research, etc) once who was in a similar circumstance at a top-tier school basically offered a spot with scholarship after 3rd interview of the day and meeting with dean. The student then proceeded to tell them he couldnt possibly consider a spot there unless his fiance was also interviewed(now that is Chutzpah). She was a solid applicant but not outstanding. The school actually flew them both back for her interview, where the the interviewer's last question was to her was why should let you in with just a 30 on your MCAT. She cried on the entire flight home. 2 days later, they both got acceptances via fedex.
That is next-level.

You just met a future Dean.
