If you applied this cycle and were accepted to a few schools, what are your chances of being accepted in the future if you decide not to go this fall?

If you were accepted to a few schools and decide NOT to go there then DON'T ever apply there again.. they are not going to accept you again if you reject them the first time...lol.. common sense I know...
You should pick other schools to apply to and they might accept you...

Ps. Unless its meharry or howard or somewhere in the FREEZING cold... WHY in the hell would you decide NOT to attend a dental school if accepted??? (I am just wondering....) its hard to get in, why don't you go??

Honestly, if I get accepted to any school, no matter what the weather or the circumstances, i'm there, take it as a blessing, you never know whats going to happen. Each year it gets harder and harder, you really want to do that to yourself?

From personal experience, you can be accepted again even if you decline the offer in a previous cycle. As long as you write a letter to the schools explaining why you have decided to postpone dental school (and assuming it's a legitimate reason), you should be fine. I was accepted to a school 2 years ago and got accepted again this cycle. If it's a school you're definitely interested in attending, you should apply again.

If you're not wanting to attend just 'cuz then you should reconsider your decision to postpone school.

Hope this helps!

someone on SDN applied a couple of cycles ago & was waitlisted at UF and later offered a spot in the class. this person turned down UF's offer and decided to work for a couple years.

fast forward 2 years and this student decides to apply to d-school again. once again, waitlisted at UF couple months later offered a spot in the class!! applicant turns down UF again for UoP.....

true story.

moral of the story: yes it's possible to get into the same d-schools again if you turn them down...but make sure you have a damn good reason and if its possible try to get a deferred acceptance to next years class.

best of luck,
jb!🙂

i believe some schools may allow you to defer your acceptance for a year. probably depends on the school.

As to why you'd wait a year, i can think of plenty of reasons . . . death in the family, having a child, etc.

Possible . . . yes.

A gamble . . . perhaps.

As a side, you'd make whoever got your spot from the waitlist happy.

Afraid that distance does not make the heart grow fonder and your fiance is going to start seeing other girls.

Here is a sad but true story. A friend of mine went off to study at Oxford England for a year for her Masters'. Her and the fiance had been together for 7 years and they just bought a house together in Flordia. While she was over in England all she could think and talk about was the wedding when she came back from England. She had everything planned, and was one of those people that every day talked about something that had to do with her wedding. Well her guy got bored of waiting, the whole year they did the long distance phone thing while he banged another girl and broke the engagement off a few months before she finished her Masters'. 👎thumbdown👎

If you have good stats and a good reason I think reapplying is fine. Dental schools know you are human too and sometimes situation and circumstances do happen that would mean you would be better to attend dental school another year.

I am curious why you chose to single out those above mentioned schools, and which schools in the "FREEZING cold" are you referring to? In the latter, for a Florida or California resident, freezing cold weather could include over half of all dental schools.

I was wondering the same thing...

According to his statements in other threads SHC thinks Harvard and Columbia are the best school
in the whole wide world cuz they're Ivy league. Ivy league schools don't attract me that much but
well... i guess some people are crazy about ivy.

I was going to say that too, I think it's the ivy league thing because I have read it somewhere before. It doesn't do much for me either, wherever I go, I'm going to go and represent to the fullest!!!lol

Thats not cool. You can't put down other schools like that. That is really disrespectful to people who are attending or going to attend meharry or howard. One should respect others on where they choose to go because we know we all tried really hard to get to this place. Just because you like ivy schools don't justify those kind of action. In fact you're not even attending one of those ivy league schools, even if you do you can't say harvard is better than others. We all know ivy schools are great, but not all people think that they are the best. I'm sure you'll feel bad if people put you down just because you didn't get in this year. Lets respect others. People going to meharry or howard will come out with the same degree. After all we're all in the same group. DENTISTRY.👍

They will look at you negativly and in the future cycles, they will feel that your true passion is not set for dentistry.... Cause if it was, You should have jumped on the opportunity UNLESS of course you have a serious illness or a family-member lose or something dramatic that REALLY forced you to refuse the acceptance

If you want to go to one of the schools you, but want to start one year later, call that school and ask if you could be deferred one year. If they say yes, then you're done. If no, then either go this year or don't apply there next year. The worst they could do is say no.

Am I the only one who inferred that Meharry and Howard are somehow inferior schools? The only distinguishing thing that these schools have in common is that they largely accept only minority students. Is this a legitimate reason not to attend dental school!?! I thinks its sad that people really think like this.

No, I never said Harvard was number 1 in the nation. (I have imply harvard is a good choice if you are planning on specializing, that's all i said about that..)

And Yes, I don't care for Howard or Meharry because they favor a certain group of people. I believe all schools should pick students that are the most qualified academically and those two schools do NOT. This is just my opinion, no one has to agree. Just like there are a lot of people here with negative opinions about USC for some reason...I have my own opinions as well.

The school that is the best if you are planning on specializing is the school you think you can do the best at. No matter what school you are at, if you do well on the boards, are involved with extracurriculars and research, and are in the top ten percent in your class, your chances are good. It is much more about the individual than it is about the school. Trust me, I've been through it.
I also think you may want to watch what you say about other schools. It is fine to mention that you dislike them, but to imply that one should defer acceptance to one of those schools is absurd. Your naivety speaks volumes.
