The kind of tool that years later, still can't get over what an academic "god" he was as a preteen.

The kind of tool who carries a miniature, laminated official transcript in his wallet, in place of a picture of the girlfriend he'll never get.

The kind of tool who so strongly believes that he is defined by his MCAT score, he puts in into his nickname.

The kind of tool I hope never becomes a doctor, because I wouldn't want my life in his hands (and if he carries this attitude with him into residency, he likely won't be).
 
um the reason i listed my HS stats is b/c its my HS stats that got me into a guaranteed med program as sooon as i entered college.

and as far as i could tell, this was a "accepted stats" page right? well i've only been "accepted" to one place so far.

:laugh: You guys crack me up! Thanks. Such a stress reliever! God, I don't remember (or even care to) my high school stats. I think it's too bad that this app process makes us internalize these #'s so much (gpa, mcat . . . . ) as part of our identity. Hopefully, we can all recover our identities intact at the end! 😉

well, excuse me if posted my stats on this page. that was the original point of the person who started it right? to have ppl post their stats???!!! idiot. the fact that u r getting so riled up over it obv shows a lack of something on ur part.

if you flame a person for putting up their stats, regardless of the grounds, the next fellow is going to feel a bit cautious i imagine. i think this thread is helpful when people can see where more typical pre-meds (not 3.9+ 35+) get in. but those supastar outliers are always welcome🙂 gluck.jot.
 
i guess it's human nature to want to be patted on the back. most people who post on this thread probably are just seeking that. (NO NEED TO GET UPSET- i'd probably do the same if i was already accepted) .
but in no way do these guys reflect typical applicants.

dr. kevin is hillarious. apparently he needs a little extra lovin in his life. sorry man, you just didn't sound too good posting your hs stats. and saying that someone is jealous of you--- didn't help your cause.

so what school are you at? (curious as to what those kind of stats can get someone into) Must be nice not having to go through the whole app process!
 
i think we should all lay off dr. kevin40 just a little bit. to his credit, this was a thread about accepted stats, and while it seemed to suggest college gpa and mcat (in the name of relevance to readers), he was well within his right to post his 800s. does posting his h.s. stats make him look just a little bit narcissistic and egotistical? probably. but does it warrant getting flamed by everybody else? i hope not. that said, i do think he would do himself a great service to perhaps lighten up just a little bit. we all know (thanks to his subtle choice of screen name) that he is extremely bright; but so are many of the people who post on this board. i have found sdn to be extremely helpful in a number of ways while trying to make sense of the application process; it bothers me when well-intentioned posts degenerate into overheated arguments, name-calling, and gunners stroking their fragile egos. remember, we're all working toward the same goal. we can use the excuse of anonymity to justify some of the actions on this board, but what you do when nobody is watching often offers the best insight regarding the true nature of a person.
 
first of all, i'm not a gunner. if anyone knows me in real life, they would know that i'm real kick back and don't care so much about grades/scores/such.

but that doesn't mean that i don't have a right to post things according to the original thread title.

the only reason i posted HS stats is b/c it was those that got me into a bac/md program.

and for lavidee, i go to a school in so cal. but i am still going thru the app process...just going thru it w/ something in the bag. those stats got me into harvard and yale
 
Indeed, we all know that those people who have credentials above the "competitive" numbers we read on every school's website will get into medical school somewhere. And, of course, it's fun to see just what you need to have to get into Harvard and Johns Hopkins. 😉

But I'm sure the purpose of the thread is to provide a glimmer of hope for the folks who are sitting there checking their mailboxes while watching the interview list get longer and longer and wondering if they've got the qualifications to pique the interest of some medical school out there....

you know, if this thread was supposed to give some hope to those of us who are borderline, they should have just titled it.. .
"HOW THE HECK DID I GET ACCEPTED WITH THESE STATS..."

I agree with ga07 that this thread (well at least the 1st few pages) do a good service to SDN overall. People (myself included) often like "hard data" that they can compare with themselves to see if they have a chance. My remark about the disprop. # of high scores was definitely not meant to drive away the high scorers around here. Actually, looking over some of the other stats, it seems like a lot of people with down to earth stats did just fine. Post on!!!

Jot, here is my position:

In academics, there are two types of people that get flamed because of stereotypes, for no go reason: the people who perform very poorly, and the people who perform extremely well. For instance, a few examples from my own college:

Many times a professor uses poor judgement (in my opinion) and announces who got the highest grade on a test. In my experience, the immediate sentiment amongst many students are jealousy and anger towards that person, with comments like "You ruined our curve!" Although the person has certainly done nothing wrong by performing well, he/she will take crap for it. We've all seen it.

In my Princeton Review class, it became public who was the top scorer on the diags because the only friend that he told about the score let the cat out of the bag. Within days, people were saying things like "Did you hear that X is bragging about his score to everyone? Who does he think he is?" This person quickly got a very negative reputation as being arrogant, even though it couldnt be further from the truth - one of his favorite things to do is help other students, tutor, etc.

So, what's the relevance? I think that one of the reasons people who perform well in academics are stereotyped like this is because of a small minority of gunners who not only perform well, but also have an equally large ego. The ones that brag about themselves while putting others down. For this reason, I get upset when individuals are arrogant about their academic success. From being on SDN over the last few months and reading posts by drkevin, he has come across to me as one of these people. The way he talks to some people and the attitude that comes across in his posts upsets me.

However, I'll have to admit it is always possible that I am wrong and have misjudged drkevin, since I don't know him personally. If so, I'd be guilty of the very sin I'm condemning. This is just the impression I've gotten from the tone of many of his posts.

That would be me. I applied with a 3.99/37R, math major, good ECs and 1.5 years of research, but crappy state school. I was rejected outright by Dartmouth, Loyola, and Tufts; rejected post-secondary by Mayo; post-interview by Northwestern and Case Western; interviewed and waitlisted at Baylor, Vanderbilt, Emory, and George Washington; I was lucky enough to get accepted at my state school and a few other places, including off the waitlist at a very highly respected school where I have matriculated.

This thread has no predictive value, except perhaps to reinforce the accepted fact that all else being equal, those with higher stats have an incrementally better chance of admission on average. The process is completely unpredictable. Just apply and give everything your best shot. If you don't get in this attempt, revamp your credentials and reapply, or perhaps you will have discovered a career far better for you than medicine along the way. Good luck applicants for the class of 2007.
 
Actually I'd say that your stats basically determined where you would've ended up at...

You didn't get dinged everywhere...your experience, dare i say, is rather typical. And in the end, you got into a good school. So even without knowing your exact credentials, we could almost positively argue that people with your kind of stat would most likely get into a good school.

Accepted from Waitlist: SLU, Tufts
Undergrad GPA: 3.62 (3.49 BCPM, 3.9 AO)
Grad GPA: 4.00
MCAT: August 1998: 7V, 9P, 10B, Q. April 2000: 9V, 10P, 10B, Q

I got in on my second time applying, and a classmate of mine got in on his third try, so there is hope! g'luck..

I would agree with everything except for the arrogence part. I believe that people who do well have every right to be proud of themselves... and pride often comes across as arrogence to immature, insecure people. I'm not saying that anyone has the right to tease or make other people feel bad about not doing as well... but certainly, everyone has the right to think highly of themselves and to be proud of his/her accomplishments.

i think it's often hard to say where pride ends and arrogance begins..i could understand if some other sdn'ers thought people posting their marvelous stats were being arrogant; even if this wasn't their intention.
 
This just goes to show you how much of a well rounded person you must be. You can have 4.0/4.0 GPA, 43 MCAT but if you are not a well rounded human being all of that will mean nothing to the admissions committee. Anyone can have a 4.0 science/nonscience GPA, and can even do well on the MCAT but the question is are you good enough to be a future doctor. Do you have the level of maturity, personality, mentality, and other attributes that you will need to make you a competent doctor. 🙂

I also think we all need to get our terms straight... I know it's been a long time since I was in English class too... but let's define some words... (only for the sake of effective communication).

I think we like to use the word "arrogant" because it sounds harsh and yet sophisticated.... and when we are agry, hurt, or feeling insecure, it just feels good to call someone "arrogant." However, by the dictionary definition of the word, I can honestly say that I've encountered very few truely "arrogant" people on SDN. There are plenty of very BOASTFUL and PROUD people... but very few are truely arrogant in my opinion.

In my mind, someone who posts ther stats looking for a little praise and "oohs and aahhs" is not arrogent... but boastful. People who routinely mention (or imply) that they are better than most other posters (b/c of their stats or whatever) to the point were their attitude is overbearing... those people I would call arrogent.

Thanks, pocwana!! 🙂 I have just recently figured out that you can't just copy and past a URL into a reply because SDN has helpfully already put in the http:// for you. 🙄 Still a few bugs with the new SDN. (You also can't just copy and paste the URL of a site you've just searched for, for some reason). I changed it on my post as well, but can't change CoffeeCat's quote of my post.

I hope nobody mistakes me for a "gunner", and here are my stats: GPA 3.96, (both science and non-science)
MCAT 31(10vp,10ps,11bs)
took most pre-reqs at a local community college, average EC's, average letters, sunny personality 😉
Filled 5 secondaries, went on 4 interviews: GW, Tulane, Miami, and University of Florida.
Accepted at Miami, waitlisted in the other three.
I feel so happy and lucky to be accepted at a medical school, I was ready to apply again if that what it took. Good luck to everybody else out there!!!😍
 
ppl getting interviewed at harvard are getting no where with ucla. i feel better about my ucla interview 😛
