i think it's often hard to say where pride ends and arrogance begins..i could understand if some other sdn'ers thought people posting their marvelous stats were being arrogant; even if this wasn't their intention.
I also think we all need to get our terms straight... I know it's been a long time since I was in English class too... but let's define some words... (only for the sake of effective communication).
ar?ro?gant Pronunciation Key (r-gnt)
adj.
1. Having or displaying a sense of overbearing
self-worth or self-importance.
2. Marked by or arising from a feeling or assumption
of one's superiority toward others: an arrogant
contempt for the weak.
now... let's look at these...
boast Pronunciation Key (bst)
v. boast?ed, boast?ing, boasts
v. intr.
1. To glorify oneself in speech; talk in a self-admiring way.
v. tr.
2. To speak of with excessive pride.
To possess or own (a desirable feature): ? [the]
capital of a region in the southeast that boasts
bountiful coal fields? (US Air).
and last but not least....
proud Pronunciation Key (proud)
adj. proud?er, proud?est
1. Feeling pleasurable satisfaction over an act,
possession, quality, or relationship by which one
measures one's stature or self-worth: proud of
one's child; proud to serve one's country.
2. Occasioning or being a reason for pride
3. Feeling or showing justifiable self-respect.
4. Filled with or showing excessive self-esteem.
5. Of great dignity; honored: a proud name.
I think we like to use the word "arrogant" because it sounds harsh and yet sophisticated.... and when we are agry, hurt, or feeling insecure, it just feels good to call someone "arrogant." However, by the dictionary definition of the word, I can honestly say that I've encountered very few truely "arrogant" people on SDN. There are plenty of very BOASTFUL and PROUD people... but very few are truely arrogant in my opinion.
In my mind, someone who posts ther stats looking for a little praise and "oohs and aahhs" is not arrogent... but boastful. People who routinely mention (or imply) that they are better than most other posters (b/c of their stats or whatever) to the point were their attitude is
overbearing... those people I would call arrogent.
