Accepted students,

I just got a my award and there is a 25K gap btwn the calculated need and my award/loan amounts...

Did you also face a gap at your school? If so how much? Or did they cover everything with grants and loans?

What am I suppose to do now..? For those we have a gap, what are you doing now..

Thanks!

DO NOT FACTOR in FAMILY/STUDENT CONTRIBUTION IN THE AMOUNT THAT YOU ARE SHORT.

Are you factoring in family and student contribution?

when you fill out the fafsa, you are awarded federal stafford loans. you will receive some combination of unsubsidized and subsidized loans, and this amount is not the maximum you can borrow. your school has made an estimated budget for each year, and you can borrow up to the amount that your school has estimated that you'll need. you can borrow the remaining amount from the government, via graduate plus loans and maybe others, or get a private loan from a bank. i'd shop around for interest rates - plus loans are fixed at 7.9%.

is the graduate plus loan a part of the financial aid package?

Did you have a deficit in your budget or did you school cover everything..

thanks

there isn't a "financial aid package". the school tells you how much you might need, then you go ask people for loans. fafsa is a convenient way to get a big chunk of the loan from the government. if that isn't enough, you need to apply for another loan. that loan can be a plus loan from the government or you can apply for one with a bank, whatever is the best deal for you. through plus loans or private loans, you will be able to ask for up to the maximum amount of your budget, assuming the budget you're referring to is one given to you by the school. you shouldn't have any trouble getting the full amount unless your credit is awful. people generally seem to not mind loaning to future dentists for some reason.
