I was curious if anyone here had a poor undergrad GPA, but was then accepted to medical school after succefully completeing a Masters.

Just need some input

I had a poor undergrad showing and returned six years later for my Masters. I was able to do really well (Biology) and will be attending LECOM in August.

My undergrad wasn't totally terrible, but it definitely had it's rough edges. I got my MS in computer science, worked for 10 years, and then got in to med school this year. ( 2 MD, 1 DO)

I would recommend calling the schools you are interested in and talking to a counselor. The masters will certainly help you (especially if in a medically related field) but you may be able to address your problems with a little less effort.

Good luck.

3.0 undergrad (ie, not stellar by any stretch)

Valedictorian in MBA

Worked a couple years

Smoked a post-bacc and the MCATs while doing some research

Now, two years left in an MD/PhD at a decent place (that I love)

It can happen, you just have to package it right. In reality, I don't think having the MBA helped. Rather, doing well in the post-bacc was probably more important (and the MCATs) as adcoms could understand and evaluate that better (most didn't get what B-shcool was about). Some grad bio classes MIGHT help if the masters is in a somewhat distant field.

Just my thoughts/experience.

Well I'm currently in the heat of the application process. I have a 4.0 in a Biology Masters with a Neurobiology concentration. I am working in a Lab and will hopefully publish in the Fall. My MCAT is average, 27. I have 4 years exp as a 911 paramedic and tons of hospital as well (I currently work in a pedi ER). I am married and have a son. I am hoping they will see I have matured, but you can never predict adcoms.

I had a 3.14 GPA in biochemistry from UCLA. Took MCAT twice and the second time I did better and got a 31 (first was a 29). Well needless to say the GPA hurt me and I was rejected by 17 schools the first time I applied right out of college, not even one interview. I am also a CA resident.

Went to Philadelphia for two years to get a masters from Drexel. Did great research work in CT technologies working with the AbiCor artificial heart.

Second time I applied got five interviews and went to four of them. Got accepted at 3 places.

Therefore doing more work can always help you. Down side is extra debt I incurred as a graduate student.
