i was reading MSAR the other day and was trying to figure out what the acceptance rate would be for each school rather than just know the number of students who matriculate there. i'm assuming the ratio is something like 2 to 1. (i know for a fact that this is true for duke.) in other words, say 200 students are accepted from the people who interview. around 100 or so actually end up going there. is this a fair assessment or is the ratio leaning more towards 3 to 1? thx guys!

🙂

probally the better the school the lower the ratio would be. I assum a school like Hopkins or Harvard dosent have to admit a huge number of people to fill there class. A school like Temple probally has to accept almost 3 to 4 times as many people than they have seats for

for a small fee USNEWS.com will tell you the exact amount interviewed/accepted/matriculated.

Good advice. I did this and it really helped to put things into perspective.

The "interviewed" vs. "matriculated" is a huge jump in the MSAR so it's nice to see "accepted" vs. "matriculated" because it gives you a much better idea of what's going on.

Hmmm.. I wonder the legality of somebody taking the info from there and posting it here. Intuitively, I think it would be illegal, but then again, it is just data available freely from most of the schools anyways, right?

That would depend on how they put together the info. If it is all freely available and in the public domain someplace, you would be free to redistribute it, but if they had to do something to collect or calculate it, it would be proprietary. Most likely the latter.

Doesn't USNEWS print a book with all the med school ranks? Couldn't one just goto the library or Barnes and Noble and check the data. I think i'm gonna do that today heh.

But they don't own their data. They have a copyright on the compilation of the data, but it's okay for someone on this site or elsewhere to distribute the data in their own form.

some schools i see are like 4-1 or 5-1. Like Drexel and NYMC. Prolly cuz a lot of ppl uses them as safety schools

The USNews "Ultimate Guide to Medical Schools" lists the number applied, interviewed, accepted and enrolled, divided into in-state vs out-of-state. The rest of the info on individual schools is about the same as what's in the MSAR. The first few chapters on general stuff are worth reading, too.

 SDN has it's own team of lawyers on retainer.
