Alright so I accidentally signed up for this upper level online science elective which I finished over 2 years ago and it is now after the drop date without getting a W, the university allows us to retake classes and I guess this is why I was able to sign up for it even though I got an A the first time. I have two options the first is to petition to drop it without getting a W, (but then I will have only 11 credit and my advisor said that it would look bad to have less than 14 credits a semester.) Of course they might reject me. I can also petition a late add to another class while doing this, but the chances of getting approved as well as being able to drop this class I feel are slim to none. Option B would be to just retake the class and get another A in it. Though I am not sure what med schools will think of it when I go to my interviews. I only needed three credits this semester to graduate and the only reason I took 14 credits was to have another competitive semester, so I feel if I just drop the class I will have taken 11 credits of difficult sciences while still remaining as non-full time and looking weak in my application. What do you guys suggest I do.

Drop the class if you can get away without a W on your transcript. No one cares if you took 11 credits as long as you finish the semester with good grades. Better than having the same class on transcript an dbeing asked more questions in interviews.

Just bite the bullet and drop it. Consider this to be tuition paid in the College of Life. And pay more attention from now on.

But if I lose tuition either way and they reject the petition wouldnt it be better to keep my full time course and just take it again instead of dropping it, losing tuition, and getting a W on my transcript?

Drop it, even if it does mean you get a W. One W won't hurt you. They don't look *that* closely at your # of credit hours; and since you only need 3, you won't exactly look lazy for taking 11. And what better reason to drop a class then you already got an A in it?... Now you just need a good reason why you signed up for it a second time.

Concur; One W doesn't hurt. Hell, even a C or two can be tolerated, even by top schools.

So quit fussing.

I'm just confused how you got through syllabus week without realizing you had already taken the course...
The course is an online one and the first assignment in the course is due after the drop date. I also have my MCATs in one week so I was preoccupied with that most of my time and I did the assignment last second/ didn't look at the course until last second.

Also I petitioned to have the class dropped and it was rejected so now I am back to the original question, whether it would be best for me to just take the class (introduction to physical immunology) again and hope they won't or claim that I was done with all my classes and since I took the course 3 years ago I thought it was a good upper level science to take or if I should just drop it and receive the W. I already have a couple of W's so I would like to prevent it.

Take the W, it would be a real waste of your time to re-take a course that you didn't fail. If you are given the chance to explain the Ws you can explain why you dropped all of them and then say something like "I accidentally signed up for a course I had already taken and didn't notice until it was too late without taking the W." That will raise some eyebrows but if anyone takes a look at your course list and sees you took the same course twice and got an A both times that would seem worse in my eyes. You can take the class anyways and hope that no one looks at your course listing and notices the double-dip but I would not be willing to take that risk, personally. Add/Drop is over for you so I guess just take 11 and use all of that free time to do other productive things for your application? You made a mistake so there is no good way out; accept the consequences and save your time instead. Time is precious.

I think everyone will believe your explanation that you accidentally registered for it twice when it appears twice on the transcript. The "one W = instant rejection never ever ever drop a class" thing is bizarre and I don't know where it came from.

Thanks to all of your suggestions, they also said I can try and exchange the class but I would still receive a W, so I am going to just drop it I suppose and receive the W.

A W isn't a big deal. I don't know why people think it is. Unless there's a pattern of W's, don't trip.

Have you spoken to your advisor? In person? This needs to happen yesterday

As others said, a W is okay.

The reason is kind of weird. How do you not realize that you already had taken the class before? Especially 1-2 weeks into the class?

Man what is it with your school's drop date being so early. At my school you had time to take the first test and get your grades back before dropping.

So your university lets you sign up for a course you've already gotten an A in, and then prohibits you from dropping it?

What kind of university is this?

Pretty much every university does it this way. They all have a "drop date", after which you have to eat a W. They don't give a flying flip what you got the first time.

But why would they let a student retake an A?

sorry now that this has passed, I feel more comfortable saying this but I think this is hilarious

Sounds like the California Northstate of Undergrad

*BA DUM CHING*
Dang, my phone told me it had failed to send that post so I was just in the middle of writing you a more substantive answer. Here it is anyway:

1. The registration system is automated and doesn't query the grading system to see if a student's already taken a class.
2. They collect tuition money regardless of what the student's taking.
3. They don't care if you retake an A any more than an F.
4. It's not their job to save students from themselves.

(I liked that last one, so I was included it on the repost. 😀)

I guarantee you that basically every university in the country does it this way.

My small liberal arts school was able to make the registration system sensitive to retakes and missing prereqs. I figured that was par for the course.
