I heard this is not a good idea. I'm hoping that the two programs at this hospital have completely different staff (eg. secretaries). Anyone have any advice on this topic? 😕

If it was an accident, then cancel the one you didn't mean to apply to. If it wasn't an accident then you may want to tread carefully, or have a good answer if they find out why you are applying to two different fields (sometimes there are good reasons for doing so, but usually it implies indecisiveness about your career). As to whether they will find out, I would defer to someone else. I think they would assume that most applicants are applying to only their specialty and not go seek out this information, but they may stumble upon it for various reasons.

Thanks for the help. If I cancel an application do you think they'll at that point notice I applied to another program?

No because they won't have access to that information unless you offer it, or for some strange reason they (the PDs) get into a random discussion about you.

I'd bet that most of the time if and when candidates get found out applying to two specialties at the same hospital its either because:

1) the candidate let it slip

or

2) you were seen at two different interviews

Like yaah says, finding out is usual serendipitous on the part of the program, not actively sought.
