Was wondering what other schools do for accommodations.

I'm doing an obligatory two week rural placement in FM and was given a place to stay at some random person's house. Is this normal protocol - being housed at a random person's house from the community? Might be awkward considering I have the tendency to be a night hawk at times... In the past I've been housed at the university dorms. Would appreciate some feedback.

If you're in a small town, everyone is going to know your business as well as who you are.

Opt to find your own housing if possible.

Generally in rural areas you should be happy you are not sleeping in a tent and showering in the OR locker room Yes, it's normal and you should have a good time with gracious folks who are opening their home to you. It is how rural people are. There likely is not another option unless there happens to be a hotel that you will fork out your own $$ for. Remember that free is always better.

We had multiple rural rotations and sites. Most of them had semi furnished apartments paid for by the school. Two had a situations where you stayed with the physician or their family. I am guessing you are using the word random colloquially rather than in the specific sense.

I think you will survive for a few weeks. Be a considerate guest.

Mine was in a house. Except it catered to people like us. Honestly loved it. There med students in a comfortable environment was nice.

I lived in a person's house on my rural-ish FM rotation, but there were 3-4 other med students living there as well. The homeowner is friends with someone at the office and she gets paid to room rotating students. Wasn't weird and was actually really fun. She had a BBQ for us one weekend. Also 2 full kitchens so we could cook, big driveway so we could all park, and we each had our own room.

You're lucky that your school provides housing for any rotations.

Yah, just finished my rotation.. It was fine.. Just the family was quite talkative... And Wouldn't stop talking about hockey.. On the plus side.. Lunch in the form of tubberware and supper was provided for me 😀

My school also had mandatory rural rotations. The town I rotated in did have some students living in some old lady's spare bedroom, which i think is weird. Luckily myself and one other student got a 2 bedroom separate apartment above some couples house, but they weren't connected it was set up as a stand alone apartment. My second rural rotation I did within reasonable driving distance (~40 min) and just stayed at my own apartment. Other site's were just as variable, some people got apartments/rented condos and others just got a bedroom in someones house. At least we never had to pay for any of it.

Remind me to never speak of my away rotation where I spent my living in a call room. For a month. If you want bad: there you go.
