Does anyone know how the accreditation for PGY-1 year work? I'm currently in DO PGY-1 IM year, and may want to consider to apply for some other specialty for PGY-2 (Anes, Derm, or Rads). I'm pretty sure that I'm eligible for any of the DO programs, but what about MD? do I have to start all over if I want to swith? I haven't taken usmle's either, but I know plenty of people in MD programs without USMLE scores. I wouldn't mind taking usmle step 3 (if i'm eligible). But the main question is will my intern year be accepted by any of the md programs?

Thanks

Your intern year will definitely be accepted, you cannot take USMLE Step 3 unless you've passed Step 1 and 2.

Not quite that simple.

Both the ABR (Rads) and the ABA (Anesth) are happy to accept an AOA internship as a PGY-1, so no problem there.

The ABDerm and the ABPN (Neuro) do not appear to accept AOA credentials. They both seem to insist on ACGME training. They can always make an exception, but do not have to.

I was looking up all the stuff on dual AOA/ACGME accreditation today, and finally found a semi list (for those of you who are interested in that).. You can check the box when searching for programs in advanced search at:

http://opportunities.osteopathic.org/search/

this is just fyi for all other people looking for same stuff

It is my understanding however that a program has to be dually accredited to qualify as an intern year for anesth and rads. Are there any program directors out there who would be able to confirm otherwise?

Does anyone know where I can find requirements for starting as PGY-2 in anesthesia lets say, so that I dont miss the boat with my first year by having some wrong rotations?

Thanks to everyone for reply 😳

I went under "advanced search" and clicked the "Dual AOA/ACGME accredited Program" for internships, and I got zero results.

I know for a fact that there are several internship programs that are dually-accredited (both ACGME and AOA).

Do you have any suggestions on how to find a comprehensive list? This used to work fine, and then the AOA changed the internship year and now nothing comes up.

I was looking for a dually accredited internship three years ago. I found several of them on the AOA opportunities site but all of them were categorical FP or IM spots. So I couldn't use one as a prelim year before Neurology. There may be some dually accredited prelim programs out there but I don't know how to find them.

Page 2 starts talking about the requirements for the clinical base year (PGY-1). Basically 6 inpatient months (IM, Peds, Surgery, etc), with an additional 1-2 months each of CCM and EM, max 1 month of Anesthesiology.
