Hey All,

Yale has been having some accreditation problems with the department of surgery residency program in general surgery... and since emergency medicine is a division of that department... i was wondering if it would in anyway effect the future of the residency in EM... Does anyone have the scoop on that?

Peace

I interviewed there, and they said that there was no problem (naturally). Really, though they are in the same dept they are two independent residency programs. They surgery program is again accredited. EM seemed like a solid program with lots of research. 4 years. I ranked them pretty highly.

Yale EM has been fully accredited, and is definetly a solid program. The faculty is diverse, with many different academic interests. I think that EMS is one of the stronger academic areas of the residency program. Dr Cone is an EMS guru, publishes several times per year, and is very connected with the local and national EMS systems...
The surgery residency was put on probation for overworking the residents...They have since resolved this problem, and the surgical residents now work less hours. Although the EM and Surgical residencies fall under the Dept of Surg, they really are pretty far apart politically...
New Haven is a great place w/ lots of great restaurants walking distance from the hospital. There are several colleges in the area, so there is a good night life. NYC and Boston are an easy train ride away...
Good luck, and if the surgical program is your only concern, then forget about it and go for it!
