Hi I recently just go accepted to a PT program but is not accredited yet. They have been granted candidate for accreditation and I was told that the program would be accredited when graduating during the interview. Was wondering if anyone knew more about accreditation and if its a huge risk to go.

What school did you get in too? I’m curious to see the answer to this as well.

I would not taken this risk if I was also excepted to an accredited school. Maybe you could contact the accreditation agency and ask them how much the probability is that this school will be accredited in 2 years.

I honestly wouldn't take the risk. There still may be a chance they don't get accredited and the school must be accredited in order to sit for the boards. Look at other options if you can.

Does anyone know the number of schools that have gotten canadacy of accreditation who did not get accredited at the end? I would look at that number. Determine if that's a risk you are willing to bet on.

When I started my program in 2017, the program had only been given candidacy for accreditation. I was initially hesitant about taking the offer but I am happy that I did considering that the program got accredited last year. I'm pretty sure my program director told us that there has been no PT program that has been denied accreditation after being past the candidate for accreditation stage. I wouldn't let this defer you from accepting an offer if one comes your way!

I have not heard of a school not getting accredited for their first graduating class. It is a long process for the school to go through to be granted candidacy, so they have put in a lot of work to get the program up and running.

Also, on the off chance that the school does not get accredited, you will be able to finish at another school and get your license. I am not entirely sure on the process for this, but they are not going to just leave you out to dry.

Just wondering, did you end up accepting the offer? I just got offered an interview for Messiah and am debating on if I want to turn it down. It'd be quite the travel for me and am wondering if it's worth taking up the interview offer.

I think it is going to depend on your personal opinion and comfort level. I declined an interview for a program that also was a candidate for accreditation because it just did not sit right with me. I have no doubt that the program will receive its accreditation, but for me the uncertainty of not knowing things like graduation rate and how well the students will do on their boards (i.e. first time pass rate) played a huge part. I had no idea how well that program was preparing its students to be clinicians, so I opted out. But I say to go with your gut feeling! I’m sure you will be fine either way🙂
