When searching programs on FREIDA (surgery) there is a difference in Accredited Length and Required Length for some. What does this mean?

Say, for example, University of Tenn at Chattanooga is Accredited for 5 and Required for 6...

Confused. Any help is appreciated!

In surgery, you do five years of residency training. The Chattanooga program is 6 years long....the "extra" year is spent doing research or, in a few sporadic cases at some programs, doing a CC year. Some programs are 7 yrs with 2 years of research. Other programs are "research optional" or "no research" programs. This is something to pay close attention to, as "strongly encouraged" and similar buzz words on the program websites is code for "research required".
