I'm planning on attending the ACEP Scientific Assembly this year in Seattle for the first time. I'm a fourth year medical student and I will be attending the residency fair on Sunday. This leads me to my semi-OCD type question....

What should a guy wear to this event? I assume this will be a fairly informal chance to talk with PDs and other representatives from EM programs. I was guessing "business casual" (e.g. collared shirt/khakis). Is this too casual? Is this a jacket and tie kinda thing? At least a tie?

and...

How about the regular conference proceedings - such as lectures and hands-on events?

Any advice is appreciated as I'm a bit neurotic during this application season. Thanks.

At SAEM in May, business casual was by far the most common attire. Throw on a tie if it helps soothe the OCD, but I don't think a jacket is necessary.

FYI...the residency fair is on Sunday. 🙂

This topic got tossed around last year as well. You can search for all those answers.

Basically business casual is fine. The PD's are unlikely to remember you (unless you're in either the powder orange tux or wearing nothing but a pair of nut-huggers) as they're gonna see hundreds of people in ~2 hours. It's a real meat market approach.

The regular conference proceedings are quite relaxed. Jeans/khakis and a polo should suit you fine. And especially comfortable shoes.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear! Business casual for the job fair on Monday, then PGY-3 slob for the rest of the conference!

Now now. I remember your attire from the New Orleans residency fair. I know that the bolo tie is formal wear in TX and all, but not in Seattle. 😀

I do not now, nor have I ever owned a bolo. You must be thinking of my friend from scott and white. I was the guy in the sombrero and chaps.

Our Texas PD always dresses in a navy blue polo shirt and khakis. Haven't seen a cowboy hat or bolo on him yet.

There needs to be a dress code for Texas PDs....

No, it wasn't me or my PD. I just had on boots. Our friends over at Parkland, however, were in full on cowboy mode. Hat, boots, buckle and vest.

I don't even think I'll be wearing my boots to the residence fair. They're sort of extra weight to pack.

Take care,
Jeff
