Does anyone - particularly if there is a program director out there - know if there is a rule about not being able to take vacation days during the last week of June?

I am starting a second residency in EM in July and I want to use my last 5 days of vacation June 23 - 28 so that I can attend my new program's orientation and be ready to start my new residency on July 1st. My current PD called my new PD and told hiom that I would not be released until June 30. FYI: the new program is clear across the country so there is no way I am starting on July 1st. I asked if I could use vacation days, PD said no and cited some AAFP or ACGME rule that says residents cannot take vacation during the last wek of June.

Anyone know the deal?

Feel free to PM.

It's common practice for residency programs to prohibit vacation during the last two weeks in June and the first two weeks in July. Graduating residents are sometimes excepted. I'm not sure if this is an AGCME requirement or simply to facilitate a smooth transition from one year to the next. Either way, it makes sense.

Your PD could probably make an exception for you if he wanted to. He would, however, be setting a precedent.
