ACGME Match Countdown

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I bet there will be at least one poor bastard that will match advanced spot but not prelim year. Pretty sure I know who it is too.
What would one do in a situation like that?

It's easy enough to SOAP into a prelim if you're competitive enough for an advanced program

I know someone (currently a PGY2 in their #1 pick advanced spot) who didn’t even bother applying to prelims/TRIs/TYs and scrambled into one on purpose. Only works if you don’t care much where you do your intern year geographically, and it’s risky, but it saved thousands of dollars in applications and interview season. This person was fortunate enough to find an intern year in the same city as their advanced position, so it all worked out.

This works well in every specialty that requires pgy1 except for neurology. Unlike radiology/Derm/anesthesia/etc..., you can only do preliminary medicine for neurology. Therefore, you can’t rely on SOAP since prelim medicine, unlike prelim surgery, dont have too many unfilled position for scramble.

Thats a ballsy move no prelim interviews at all ... hmm i wanna see how this turns out

Good luck everyone!! Can’t wait to hear where everyone ends up!

MD applicant here: Will spend Sunday night partying and will go to bed at 4am on Monday. 1 diphenhydramine will help me sleep pass 11 am.

They won't accept a TY

My senior resident was a FM guy who didn't even bother to apply to AOA OR ACGME - just sent in a token application and scrambled into whatever he can find. Guess it worked out - he's a total bro too

They do, but they require 8 months of inpatient IM. The vast majority of TY's don't meet this criteria.
That's crazy... I was told that preliminary medicine right now is as competitive as getting into a mid tier university IM program... You might find a low stat applicant who got matched into advanced neuro but have a hard time getting a preliminary medicine spot... What will happen to such applicant? Isn't the program obligated to find you a spot?

I’d say it’s even more competitive.

The program is not obligated to find you anything. If you can’t secure a spot till July, then you lose your advanced position and would have to reapply next year.

It’s a very crappy situation to be in. It’s almost better to go completely unmatched than being match only to an advanced position. At least when you don’t match anything you can still scramble into FM/IM/Peds, but in this scenario, you can’t because you are matched to a PGY2 position.

The answer is to just match categorical.

I hope someone will match ortho at MGH just so I can stop hearing the endless and pointless arguments of how going to a DO school ruins someone’s career.
Jk, the argument never ends.
Don't worry, in such a scenario, the vox populi would suddenly have the revelation that MGH is really just a mid-tier university program and that it's really not all that impressive.

I’m a 3rd year and I’m anxious/stressed for you guys. Next year is gonna be aweful. Good luck!

I just went out with a classmate who matched into EM and whose bf did not match... and she was saying that the SOAP is brutal this year. There are not many unfilled spots even at the least competitive specialties...

I find it interesting that, proportionally speaking, some of these "uncompetitive specialties" had less unfilled spots than some ultra competitive specialties. Example: PMR vs Derm.

People should always have a plan B in this process... I wonder how many unfilled spots are there in each specialty.

You have access to this info.

It’s on your NRMP account under reports

if you still have your NRMP login, you can go to the reports section and look at how many open spots there are still left, it obviously wont tell you which program but its interesting to see how competitive things have gotten.
