My program director says that if the ACGME places a program on probation, then the chiefs cannot sit for the boards and cannot graduate from the program. After scouring the ACGME website and these forums, I cannot find anything that supports her statement. Can anyone weigh in?

Fearmongering by the PD in an attempt to get you to not report whatever things that would lead to your program being on probation.

The only way to move past the problem is to IDENTIFY the problem.

If the program goes on probation the current class will graduate and sit for boards. If in x number of time the program does not improve and probation is not lifted, then the program would likely close and then obviously the residents couldn't graduate. But most programs that do go on probation are able to fix things and go on.

Your response is funny and sad at the same time.

I agree with everyone else that this is likely untrue. However, the place to look for it is not the ACGME website, but the website of the American Board of XXX. Each ABMS specialty has it's own rules for board eligibility. I doubt you will find any such rule there either, but that's the place to check.

Just a thought - dont you need verification from your program regarding satisfactory completion of residency to sit for boards? If the program itself is on probation, maybe they wont accept the letter?

Nope. While they may be on probation, they would still be accredited at that time. No reason the board wouldn't accept it. Otherwise probation would be basically a death sentence to a program.
