Hey everyone, for those of you who have taken this test...can anyone explain to me how this works. Its the question regarding polymerization of a 1,4 diene I believe. I don't understand the solution.

on polymerization problems think radicals. try to picture how the molecule can bond to another identical molecule on both sides and what radicals allow you to form those bonds. In this case, its fairly simple to see once you picture one electron from each double bond jump to the middle and form a new pi bond to eachother and then the lone electron left on each side carbon is available to form a new bond to another lone electron on a indentical molecule. Hopefully that makes some sort of sense...thats how I approach these type of questions.
