Hi. Hope everyones doing well. I'm having a little confusion with Achiever Sciences Test 2, Chem question 58. I did a search, but nothing came up.

Which of the following notations correctly represents a Daniell cell employing Zn and Cu electrodes?

A.Cu(s)│Cu2+║Zn2+│Zn(s)

B.Zn(s)│Zn2+║Cu2+│Cu(s)

C.Zn2+│Zn(s)║Cu2+│Cu(s)

D.Zn2+ │Zn(s)║Cu(s)│Cu2+

E.Cu(s)│Cu2+║Zn(s)│Zn2+

So the left is the anode (oxidation), and the right is the cathode. Ok, the answer is B because they say it would yield a positive emf. I understand what they mean, but without emf values, which is something we're not given, how would we know which one will give a positive EMF (since a Daniel cell). A could also work.

So how would we know which is being oxidized/reduced without EMF values?

Thank you.
