Okay dudes...You may know the answer to this:

Pg. 290 of Kaplan Blue Book or pg. 932 of Kaplan Book (same thing) towards the bottom of the page.

Kw = [H+][OH-] = 10-14

Kw = (x + 1 * 10-8)(x) = 1.0 * 10-14

Question: Why did they substitute (x + 1.0 * 10-8) for [H+]? I understand why 1.0 * 10-8 is there, but not why they’re adding x to it.

Please help!
