How does one tell in O chem question comparing molecules which one is more basic or acidic..
Like Activators (ortho/para)-CH3, NH2, and OH are acidic or basic?
Deactivators?? are acidic or basic?
here are some general trends:
-electron widthdrawing groups/highly electronegative atoms will make a compound more acidic, (flourine, chlorine, tri-flourides, NO2, etc.), they pull electrons away from the H, making a compound want to give it up, thus more acidic
-electron donating groups will make a compound more basic, (CH3, NH2)
-activators (electron donating/ortho/para) will make a ring more basic
-deactivators (electron withdrawing/meta) will make a ring more acidic
-halogens on a ring are weird, they are electron withdrawing yet they direct ortho/para
-aliphatic rings (completed saturated with H) are more basic than aromatic rings.
hope this helps!
