There are conflicting information about this program; couple of years ago, I've heard it's not a funded program (i.e., you have to pay them so they let you work for them), and that you cannot sit for dermpath boards after this program. However, from what I've looked at recently, all the positions are funded, and graduates can take the boards. Can anybody clarify this?

Ackerman typically have 5-7 funded fellowships, with full board eligibility. However, in addition, there's a large number of visiting fellows, students etc. and they cannot sit for the Dermpath boards. Their 27-headed 'scope is usually filled to capacity...

The only people who pay for the fellowship now are international fellows (fellows planning to return to their countries). The Academy is aproved for 7 positions by the ACGME, but in recent years Dr. Gottlieb has only taken 5 fellows/yr (who are fully funded).

One dermpath fellow I knew in Boston used to come to sign outs with a tweed sportscoat elbow-bender deal and actually had a pipe in his mouth half the time. Seriously, the dude would go out on breaks and smoke up in the alley way and spout **** like why BMW was superior to Mercedes or where in Conn. he wanted to get his second home...total dick, but boy I ate that up at the time. I would be there shivering in the flippin cold writing stuff he said down in a little notebook while he smoked away. Damn I wanted to be that guy.

Enjoy the fellowship.

boy, dermpath has sure changed-- most of the fellows I know are pretty down to earth non-pretentious people. But maybe thats the difference between Boston and NY (ie Ackerman)?

Can't wait for the year to end 🙂

They only pretend to down-to-earth. Ackerman was THE most pretentious MD in the whole US at his height (hence why he was hated so) so that cant be difference.

Your bar for being pretentious is probably way higher than mine tho just from living amongst those New England Yankee-types, not my favorite people.

Yeah - Ackerman basically defines pretentious. I have met a lot of dermpath people who are not pretentious though.

I sort of pee on all NYC pathology, but of course to each his own opinion🙂

Of course I can wipe it all up with my towelie head, super absorbant. So its okay. No harm.

Don't get me started on NYC or we will have 5 new threads by day's end criticizing me and you.

I have my "I hate NYC" T-shirts for the San Diego CAP meeting all printed. I'll send you one.

just kidding tho, NYC is pretty damn fun!
