ACLS/PALS/etc.. online?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
PALS: no. Need to take the live course. ACLS does have an online curriculum that needs to be followed by a live megacode portion, but it may be training-location dependent whether this is offered where you are. If you have the actual (AHA) certification, though, I wouldn't imagine the hospital would care whether you took the mostly online vice live ACLS class for credentialing purposes.

My hospital offers the ACLS megacode if you want to do the rest of the renewal online. It's the same certificate when you finish, so you can always take the course elsewhere if your hospital doesn't offer it.

PALS is trialing an online/DVD based curriculum as well that was very similar to the ACLS set up. I was one of the guinea pigs and it seemed to work well, but the megacode/practical part of the curriculum was a little longer than the megacode that ACLS required.

Does anbody know if it is more widely accepted to take ACLS/PALS/etc... online for hospitl credentialing?

You're going to want to check with your hospital. Most that require ACLS are going to want that you take the live course. As far as which is "more widely accepted", I don't think it's even close -- most programs I'm aware of require the live course.

Interesting (probably even good). Where I'm at now as staff regular ACLS classes are only the traditional classroom based, but I was able to enroll in a study that's comparing the two types of classes. Unfortunately I was enrolled into the arm with full class time. That said-and a little OT-I thought the ACLS class was pretty good. Our interventionalist in fellowship liked ACLS didactics better than PALS. I'm inclined to agree.

Be careful...depending on where you work, some places may not accept the partially-online ACLS in place of the "all-live" version.

Not arguing, as I may not have the requisite situational knowledge: but why? If, in the end, you have a card that says "AHA ACLS Provider" in your hand (and my card doesn't say anything about what type of class I took), why should they care?

I wonder this too....how would they know if I just give them a copy of my certification? I realize not all ACLS sites offer the partial course (and wouldn't honor the online portion as completed and let you just show up and do the megacode), but can't see how the hospital would know which way I chose to renew if I went elsewhere for the course.
