Hello!

Long story short I am supposed to be applying for the 26 cycle. A couple of days ago I got a VERY intriguing offer from acom saying that they like my application and that if someone drops out last minute out of their class they would put me in(this is all dependent on my A post interview ofc). I am in a bit of a confusing situation because I have the stats to get into the higher tier DOs but don’t know if waiting the year is worth it since I can’t really find a job in medicine right now. I probably can’t get into MDs so I only applied to a few of them. My main concern with acom is that apparently in their last class they lost almost 40 people(don’t know how accurate this is though as it was said by a student who dropped out). Just wanted to get your input on what ya’ll would do. I would also like to pursue anesthesiology if that helps in your decision.

Thanks to everyone who helps!!

I don’t really think there are “higher tier” DO schools. There are DO schools that are reputable, established, and worth attending, and there are DO schools that are new, unaccredited, and suspicious. ACOM, in my opinion, falls in the first category. It’s a solid school. I do not think that KCU or PCOM could offer you much more. If you get into ACOM this year, I would take it in a heartbeat.

I think I'd take the leap. For me, it would be driven by that whole "a bird in the hand is worth two in a bush" kind of thing. What I remember standing out to me from reading on SDN, Reddit, etc., are things like how their students do pretty well in the match (+), how their teaching hospital & 3rd and 4th year clerkship situations seem pretty organized (+), but how remediation/attrition apparently wasn't so smooth for some people (-). I think more positives than negatives, though, on the whole, the way I look at things.

FWIW, I've shadowed with a couple ACOM grads in a program in my local hospital. They were sharp & quite nice.

I don't know if it ever fills up or anything, but you might ask if their Summerfield Square residences still have space at this point. You probably know about it, but, if not, it's basically an apartment complex that's a 3 minute walk from the school that I think ACOM had purpose built for students. There may be downsides to it I'm not aware of, but on paper it seems to me like a big positive for the school--nice place and, obviously, everybody there is in the same boat you are for both support, socializing, and vibe. If accepting you at such a late date would mean you couldn't get space in that facility, that, for me, would be a pretty significant drawback. I'm sure there are other places to live in Dothan, but I think you'd probably be kind of out of the loop if you weren't where, I gather, most of your classmates would be living.

Best of luck w/ your choice. Seems like whether its now or later, you'll get there, right? That's some really good news either may, I think. : )

Got the same offer last cycle to start Fall 2024. Ultimately declined because I just wasn’t ready to start that year, but if you are, take it fr.

I also wanted to see how I’d fare for my other schools and I ended up getting a conditional A to my #1 choice MD school. If the thought of “what if” is bothering you, then decline the offer and interview this cycle. I got into ACOM doing just that.
