What produces (ACTH, Anterior Pit, Adrenal Cortex, or hypothal?) the glucosteriods and corticol sex steriods? Does the ACTH produce glucosteriods and corticol sex steriods but no mineral corticosteriods? Does the hypothalamus produce the Anterior Pituitary hormones or does it just direct them?
 
i thought the hypothalamus makes the hrs that are stored in the posterior pituitary like oxytocin and ADH (vasopressin)

and that glucocoritcoids and mineracorticoids are made in the adrenal cortex but the anterior pituitary makes ACTH which tells the adrenal cortex to make glucocoricoids

glucocorticoids & corticol sex hormones are produced by adrenal cortex but ACTH stimulates adrenal cortex to release them.

anterior pit produces its own hormones...but hypothalamus (neurosecretory cells) control there release.
 
neurosecretory cells of hypothalamus produce ADH & oxytocin...& posterior just stores & release them. I dont know if neurosecretory cells play any role in hormones produced by anterior pit...sorry for the confusion
 
can anyone confirm the stuff above (thanks guys above for the replies by the way). also, is it true that the hypothalamus tells AP to release ACTH which goes to the adrenal cortex to release aldesterone to increase blood volume? I thought that the ACTH had no effect on aldesterone but only the other 2 coricosteriods. Also, does anyone know what produces the mineralcorticosteriods (is it just the Adrenal cortex)?
 
The others are correct.
Yes the Hypothalamus does control the release of ACTH from the Anterior Pituitary. The Hypothalamus controls the relase/inhibition of all of the hormones in the Anterior Pituitary through Hormone Releasing/Inhibiting Factors. For instance the Hypothalamus releases Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone which travels down the Hypothalamic Hypophyseal portal veins into the Anterior Pituitary and stimulates the release of growth hormone.

ACTH does secrete Aldosterone which mainly functions in the uptake of Na+ from the distal convuluted tubule and collecting duct of the kidney. This functions to restore blood volume, increase heart rate etc.
 
Sorry.....ACTH stimulates the Adrenal Cortex to secrete glucocorticoids and Aldosterone, ACTH doesn't secrete Aldosterone itself. What you read about ACTH not having much of an affect on Aldosterone does have some truth to it. ACTH is more involved in stimulating the secretion of glucocorticoids instead of Aldosterone. But as far as I know it does still play a role in Aldosterone being secreted........Correct me if I am wrong. Bout to go google it to make sure.

Control over aldosterone secretion is truly multifactorial and tied into a spider web of other factors which regulate fluid and electrolyte composition and blood pressure. If the major effects of aldosterone are considered, it is rather easy to predict factors which stimulate or suppress aldosterone secretion.
The two most significant regulators of aldosterone secretion are:
  • Concentration of potassium ions in extracellular fluid: Small increases in blood levels of potassium strongly stimulate aldosterone secretion.
  • Angiotensin II: Activation of the renin-angiotensin system as a result of decreased renal blood flow (usually due to decreased vascular volume) results in release of angiotensin II, which stimulates aldosterone secretion.
Other factors which stimulate aldosterone secretion include adrenocorticotropic hormone (short-term stimulation only) and sodium deficiency. Factors which suppress aldosterone secretion include atrial naturetic hormone, high sodium concentration and potassium deficiency.
