OK, since this issue has to do with both dental licensure and me in my OMFS residency, I'll post this question and thread here in the Residency Forum.

Here's my question, I just took the WREB and found out that for those states accepting or recognizes WREB, they only accept or recognize the exam results for 5 years from the day I passed the exam! So for example, I'll be in OMFS residency for 6 years and if I don't activate a dental license in some state somewhere with my WREB within the 5 years since I passed the exam, then my WREB results will be expired! 👎

Make matter worse, the state of Louisiana (where I'll be in the next 6 years) is not a WREB state, which means if I want to activate a dental license so I didn't take this WREB for nothing, it has to be a state other than Louisiana just so I have an active dental license somewhere.

This sucks dude!

I recently emailed Louisiana State Board of Dentistry to see if they would consider to start to recognize WREB and if they do, then all my problems would be solved, but if they don't, then I must activate a dental license somewhere so my WREB result won't go to waste (given if that I passed)!

See, for many of you, you're doing your 6-year OMFS residency in a state that is a member of the dental board exam you took. For me, I took WREB, that is only good for 5 years to activate a dental license somewhere and the state that I'll be at doesn't even recognize the exam right now!

Anyone else with this problem and if you are, what did you do? Did you activate a dental license somewhere while you're doing your OMFS residency in another state?

I took SRTA in dental school and WREB when I got to Texas. I had a license in Tennessee and Texas, but I finally suspended my Tennessee one to save a buck. You should get a license somewhere just so you won't have to cut amalgams again after OMFS residency. If you have it somewhere, you can often get reciprocity, but even that isn't universal.

Thank you guys for your input! After researching through many dental licensure internet sites and visiting numerous individual dental boards, I've decided to activate a dental license in Minnesota. Minnesota is a state where I wish to practice eventually after my residency, I figured I'll use my WREB results now with Minnesota before they completely dis-recognize the WREB.

After contacting Minnesota Board of Dentistry this morning, I found out that as of January 1, 2007 they will no longer fully recognize WREB. From that point on, dentists who wish to obtain a dental license in Minnesota, who also passed the WREB in the last 5 years, will have to take the Part I (computer exam) & III (typodont procedures) of the ADEX to be licensed.

If I activate my Minnesota license now before 01/01/2007 with my WREB, then I can avoid all that ADEX crap which is what I plan to do. I signed up for the MN Jurisprudence for May and will submit my MN licensure application as soon as I receive my WREB results.

This whole thing is contigent upon my WREB results, of course! Man, I hope I passed!

If Louisiana decides to accept or recognize WREB in the near future, then I plan to activate that license as well!

Yah-E, see if Pennsylvania accepts results of the WREB. To activate a license there costs $20.

Damn, that's cheap!

MN Dental License

Jurisprudence Exam: $35
Application Fee: $140 (for US dentist)
Licensure Fee: $13 X number of months (pro-rates)

Dude, MN is a state that gives specialists a license without any type of board exam whatsoever.

don't think the intent was to rip on me dude cuz he's also in the "Wrong Toof Pull" club.

The info simply presented closely to a commercial format and he added the punch line.

But you can continue to laugh...laughing is good for ya.

Unless you're wanting to build-up the five years towards reciprocity (which some states don't allow while in residency), it's really a waste of money. Why pay for the first four years of residency, when your WREB, CRDTS, etc. results are good for five? I'll be applying for my dental license four-and-a-half years from when I took CRDTS. Why pay for what you're not going to use? I've got a coke habit to support...

I want to activate the Minnesota dental license now because the State of Minnesota only will recognize WREB until 1/01/2007, after that, MN will no longer fully recognize WREB. If I passed the WREB, then I want to be able to use the results for MN since MN is one of three states where I would like to practice.

Bottom line, I'm in a hurry to activate MN dental license now because my WREB results are only good for 6+ months and then expires in the state of MN!

I didn't know this. Thanks for the info!! I'm taking WREB in May, nervous? yes!

guys, someone just told me that with an MD, you don't need to take the WREB bc you can practice with your medical license... is this true???

I believe that you can practice with your medical license, but I don't think you can bill any dental insurance companies. This is bad. If you are getting an MD, get both a medical and dental license as soon as you finish dental and medical school. This way you have your license somewhere and will always have a place to practice if some other state tries to screw you over.

Exact reason why I plan to activate my MN dental license before 1/1/07, prior to the state changes its licensure requirements (WREB -> ADEX)!

Thanks. 👍 I want to bill everything from every source possible.
