why is -COR a deactivator

but when u have a benzene ring and coming off of is OCH3 that is a Activator im looking at question 70 on destroyer

on kaplan it says COR is a deactivator...sowhats goin on


also destroyer also says NO is a deactivator thats adds on ortho/para like halogens do is this true as well?

I dunnooooo orgo was a little while ago for me but in OCH3, the O has 2 electron pairs on it that it can donate to the resonanceage of the ring making it activating while COR (which is O=C-R) has no lone pairs. So I think COR is considered an "electron withdrawing group" or something and is therefore meta directing

...I think.
 
when the oxygen atom is directly attached to the ring then the group is an activator and the negative charge of the anion can easily be delocalized through resonance. however, when the oxygen is not directly attached to the ring and is attached to a carbon then the group that results is deactivating.

as far as the NO i'm never heard or read anything about it adding ortho/para and i just read the solution in destroyer and its says nothing about NO adding ortho/para. maybe you read it wrong, check out the solution again.
