First, I would like to thank you for contributing to the forum. I think you may be the first one who works both at a private practice and as a professor, or atleast the first one to disclose that type of information 🙂

I was wondering if you could offer any advice on good networking methods for an OD student. I know that the job market isnt so great in saturated areas like california or new york but maybe you have worked with students and have tips about how to position oneself to find a decent job post graduation.

For those interested in research, do you have colleagues who have found a balance between working at a university as a professor and spend time between teaching, research and clinic?

What do you feel about the current state of optometry? What should current OD students or those who will soon be attending optometry school expect? What do you think students who matriculate now should be aware of that maybe students who matriculated a few years back didnt need to worry about?

Was it difficult to find a position as a clinical professor? Did you complete a residency? If so, do you recommend it? If not, why not?

Hey!

Thanks for the input.

As a prospective student, do you think that all the negativity from current optometrists are warranted?
During shadowing many ODs, I have not yet found a OD that regrets going to optometry school.

Thanks for the detailed response! I've been working towards optometry for quite a while and never understood why everyone I asked was satisfied at practises, yet there is so much negativity on line. Thanks for clearing it a bit.

Lacrosee23,
I'm not a optometry student but a practicing optometrist 20 years plus.
Question: Since you are in private practice and a clinical professor in a OD school what are your thoughts regarding board certification?
Are you board certified or planning on becoming one?
Do you believe this board certification was necessary -formed by the very few in our profession?

Thanks.

You are board certified already. It was ruled earlier this year that NBEO certification counts as being board certified. It's a dead issue until that changes as far as I'm concerned.

"Therefore, NBEO certified=board certified."

Not according to my state board. I cannot publicly state that I am "Board Certified".
Well, I think in most states you're allowed to list it on the CAQH and check the box on insurance applications, although I think it has no bearing on anything. My point is that if any panel accepts board certification for optometry, NBEO is now as valid as any.

As far as publicly stating it, that may be a separate issue and I hope no jackasses are actually doing that.
