Actual cost of attending a DO school

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you see estimates in the 45, 50, or 60k dollar range then these fees are included. If not, then it is tuition only. I'd say most DO schools probably hover around 30-35k for tuition.

Do the $$ figures in the CIB book include living expenses etc.? Or is it just the tuition that they published?

Take CCOM for example: In the CIB, it says $44,643 for OOS tuition. This does not include any living expenses, books, equipment, or fees. It will be expensive.

I think for all schools in the CIB you'll see "tuition" listed. This does not include anything else. Tack on another $15-30K per year for living, depending on the school/area/budget/etc.

Agree with CB. MSU for example, has an OOS tuition that is absolutely INSANE. With inflation, expect your first year's tuition to be about 40K. Fees/costs/living expenses will bring your total bill for one year to about 60K. Welcome to big debt.

Thanks, I was comparing numbers with my in-state MD school, U of Minn. The tuition there is 38K for in-state. So, I don't think it is that much better.

I should clarify - MSU's OOS tuition is somewhere around 60 or 70K. Most other DO schools will be about 40K tuition.

I must'a needed more coffee when I wrote that other note. Totally not clear. My bad.

No problem, I actually knew about MSUCOM. I think they prefer IS.

Yeah, OOS for both MSU and WV are both ridiculous. I applied to both in the beginning before I realized the cost difference. I got an interview at WV and a secondary from MSU, but had to turn both down cause the cost is just too expensive.

38K for instate? wow, thats a lot.

why is the "cost to attend (minus tuition and fees)" only 4,875 dollars at PCOM/GA-PCOM, but around 20,000 dollars at other schools?

You're gonna have to cite a source and give some more info for that to make any sense and for us to be able to respond. As it stands, I really have no idea where your numbers are coming from or what they represent. What is "cost to attend" anyway?

Hey chocolate bear, the source is from the CIB booklet, and also on the member colleges page of the AACOMAS website.

For instance, http://www.aacom.org/resources/bookstore/cib/Documents/cib2009/ATSU-KCOM.pdf, at ATSU-KCOM, the "cost to attend" is around 22,000 dollars, where as at PCOM, .http://www.aacom.org/resources/bookstore/cib/Documents/cib2009/..PCOM...pdf., the "cost to attend" is only 4875 dollars..

now, I assume that "cost to attend" means the amount you have to pay for food, board, travel, gas, clothing, etc separate of the tuition and fees. If it only takes 4875 dollars to attend PCOM/GA-PCOM each year, then it is a very good deal, you'd be saving almost 15,000 dollars.

my next question is... is the 4875 dollars accurate? Could it be a typo? I find it hard to believe that one can live off 4875 dollars in the US for a year.

As someone who lives in the Atlanta area, I know you can't live off of that figure. I imagine it is either a typo or just the figure for books, supplies, and other minor things. Hopefully someone who attends PCOM-GA can tell us what they allow for living expense so we know a more accurate figure.

I have never heard of that number before. Maybe thet mean per trimester.

The financial requirement profile is going to be similar to any other school.

My Uncle who graduated from WesternU in 2005 is roughly about 300k in debt and now just finished his Anesthesia Residency and landed a job in Beverly Hills for roughly 400k a year.

I was told that PCOM philly will cost about 50-55k a year when you include everything.

Thanks for clarifying and citing your source so I could take a closer look.

In the CIB, the "cost to attend" says "(minus tuition and fees)," so I'm assuming that you're right about what this number should entail (books, supplies, room and board, etc.). However, unfortunately, the GA-PCOM number is WAY off, either due to an actual typo or a reporting error by GA-PCOM. It doesn't matter which, but it does not accurately portray the cost of attending that school. Most first-year med school budgets (9 months) look something like this:

Tuition: $10,000-50,000
Misc. Fees: $100-2,000
Health Insurance: $1,500-4,000
Books/Supplies: $2,000-4,000
Room and Board (rent/utilities/food), off campus: $10,000-14,000
Transportation (off campus): $3,000-4,000
Personal Expenses: $2,000-5,000

These numbers can vary widely and are meant to encompass a wide range of schools. The point is not the actual cost of each school, but that GA-PCOM certainly couldn't cost under $5K to attend. Room and board alone is likely double that amount.

How can he be finished with an anesthesia residency already? I don't buy it.

He's finishing his residency this June, '09 at UC Davis and had been interviewing for jobs for the past month or two and decided to accept the one in Beverly Hills that offered him 400k.
