67. The electronic configuration of a
particular neutral atom is
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p2. What is the number of
unpaired electrons in this atom?
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
E. 0

The answer is C on the key. What the eff? Isnt there just two unpaired electrons in the p-orbital.
This question seems ridiculously basic and my DATS are the day after tomorrow. If I cant get this right then I should probably consider a different profession..haha
 
I posted te same question a while back - the answer is wrong. Someone said the answer key said 2, but they were wrong too.
 
1 s electron move to p to make p half full?
3S1 3p3 so 4 unpaired electrons ?

Makes sense but how the hell are we supposed to know which one to put. Both 2 or 4 could be right just depends on how you think..

Everytime i come across a question with half filled p subshell am i just suppose to fill it by promoting 1 electron from s subshell..
 
Necro thread, but umm the answer is two.

I have this sample one, its ridiculously easy, and do not feel it is representative of the actual dat. didn't miss a single question, I breezed thru science in 30 minutes. That was not the case when I took actual exam.

I believe it is a typo. I have it in front of me and my answer key says B. they must have messed up and uploaded an incorrect version when they redid the website.

I have mine printed out from 2009 or so I can't remember.

I compared it between that and what is available on the website now, its identical, except #67 on the answer key.
 
The answer is only 2. A P orbital can hold 6 electrons (3 spin up and 3 spin down) This question is just asking you how many electrons are left without having 2 in each subshell.

Excuse this but I'll try to draw something

each underline represents a space for a pair of electrons

ok so the S shell has 2 electrons that are filled (one spin up and the other spin down)

The p shell can hold a maximum of 6 electrons but only has two. So we would only use the first 2 lines of the p orbital. So you have 2 electrons that have the same spin and don't have a counterpart.

So you have 2 electrons that aren't paired

DO NOT start promoting s orbitals into p orbitals or anything like that The only promotion are for the 5 exceptions having to do with the d orbitals for the 5 exceptions
