Hey sdn, I have a question about how adcoms look at gpa. Last semester, I had a major life problem where I had to stay home to take care of siblings because my parents were out of country. Due to this, being at home was a priority over being at school (which is 2 hours away). I listen my job and a lab position because of this. Anyway, I ended the semester off really low ofc (I didn’t know you can get W’s) so my total yearly gpa for freshman year was a 3.33. Things have sort of stabilized now and I’m trying to improve my gpa to be sort of competitive to adcoms. If im following the track that I’ve been following this semester, I should have around a 3.9 gpa (just for this semester). Next semester will be much more difficult, so let’s say I end that semester with a 3.5. Do adcoms look at upward trends in terms of average for each year (I see many on sdn who talk about upward trends while saying their average per year)? Or is It each individual semester? The only way I can hit a 3.7 gpa overall is if I manage a 3.8 average gpa for my last 6 semesters. My main question is, how do adcoms look at gpa in terms of the upward trend and does It mean they will ignore the first year (second semester) if I give a legitimate reason and get a yearly gpa of around 3.65-3.8 for the rest of my college career?
