seriously...what the hell is going on? does UNLV prefer students in western states? i have pretty good stats. DAT AA/TS/PAT 19/19/20 and GPA around 3.7 for both cumulative and science. i looked at predents.com, and there are definitely some people with less than stellar stats getting interview invites. that just frustrates me so much!!! i'd love to just get a reason from schools as to why we get rejected instead of some automatic rejection response. well ASDOH and UNLV both rejected me...still have to hear from five others schools. hope to get some good news sometime soon!!

at least ur not the only one who got it.
add mee in. geese.
and plus, i'm on the western state.

GPA and DAT scores are not the only things they go off of. If you'll remember they asked for a passport sized photo, so if you're ugly then your chances of getting in are very slight.😱

I was rejected as well. I was told that being instate is weighed heavily. So if you are from Nevada your chance of getting an interview increases... also I think they might be part of WICHE so that could play a role in it as well.

They might be looking at a certain kind of student... also if your state has a dental school it could weigh on thier decision because perhaps they think that you will go in state.

It seems as though you have competitive stats, so the possibility of going instate is strong.Of course I am not on the admissions committees, and every school has thier own calculating factors.

Keep going... and don't get discouraged.

The answer is...They are looking for people from UTAH, specifically BYU. BYU is an outrageous feeder school into UNLV.

if you live in Utah you might as well be in-state. i think what they really are looking for are people who will end up practicing in Nevada. Nevada has one of the lowest populations of dentist and doctors per capita in the united states.

Is it a bad sign if I have not heard anything since I turned in my secondary about a month ago?

You should call and check. Freaking AADSAS messed up my Lor to UNLV so my application was incomplete there for the longest time...yet they didnt even call or email me regarding that matter. I finally got that straighten out today by sending another copy to UNLV.

Oh, and by the way, AADSAS really doesnt care. I asked them if they can mailed another copy of commitee Lor to UNLV because they messed up during the process, and they just straight up told me that they wont.

And I paid 1500+ for their service?

Geez...

I don't mean to be negative, but it is very, very difficult to get into UNLV from out of state...the majority of out of state students are from Utah (BYU and University of Utah), with most of the rest coming from other western states. Regarding the incoming class of 2011, I have heard that the average DAT score is a 24 for the out of state students.

Most of those low averages are the in-state applicants, I was talking to someone the other day on campus and they got an interview last year with only a 17/17 on the DAT, they were wait listed and did not get it, but it still goes to show how easy it is for the in-state applicants. The out of state applicants scores must be pretty high to get an interview, or like they said before from BYU, Nevada at least here in Reno has a large LDS community and I'm sure UNLV assumes they'll stay in Nevada after graduating.

Add me in for the rejection. Dang~
I am going to retake the test on 9/24th, and they didn't even wait.
What up with that.
I guess it's true about 20/20 cut line for the UNLV.
(I'm from westside of states)

What were your DAT scores?

As many have said:

UNLV favors Nevada residents and residents of states without dental schools (in my case, New Mexico).

In regards to the OP's desire to find out why he was rejected:

I believe that you have some sort of right to find out why you were denied rejection - they are required to give you a reason why you weren't admitted. Of course, they could give you a lame reason like - your DAT score was too low or you have a very strong, distinct odor - but I've also known people who have spoken to Deans about being rejected and they got legitimate answers.

I talked with UNLV and they said you are either in-state or out-of-state. They said they don't care about what state you are from if it's not NV. I don't think that's completely true though. They definitely take a lot of Utah kids. I don't think that's "just by chance".

rejected today as well. i had a 21 AA with a 22 TS

it's strange to hear of all these rejections, especially from those of you who scored better than i did! UNLV was my first interview invite, and my scores are pretty close to the OP. i'm from Idaho.

guess it must have been the passport photo? 😀

They're a wiche school, they take wiche students. Even if you're not a wiche student I'm sure they favor the out-of-staters that don't have a state school.

There are a ton of mormon students from Utah who choose dentistry as a profession because it offers a career that is very appealing to their family values. From what I gather, these students are usually highly qualified as they are all competing with each other for spots in some of the region's dental schools. However, they are getting into dental school's because of their high qualifications and less so because of their regional status...it's not by chance.

And yes, schools will reject people with high stats because they make the assumption that they will get into their state dental school. Regional students are more likely to be committed to their school.
