The question is this:

Have you ever been disciplined for academic performance (e.g. academic probation, dismissal, suspension, disqualification, etc.) by any college or school?

This question is very ambiguous because it implies that academic probation is considered "discipline". If my university does not consider academic probation a form of "discipline", should I check no to this box? Please note that my institution does not list academic probation on official transcripts.

I was put on academic probation for a small period of time. There were extenuating circumstances associated with the quarter/semester that I did very poorly, and the next quarter/semester I was promptly removed from academic probation because I did much better.

I would say "yes"....

I would say "yes"....

The question is concerning whether or not I have been disciplined. I have never been disciplined and have never violated any student conduct policy. My institution does not consider academic probabtion discipline. I was not put on academic probabtion as a disciplinary action. Instead, academic probabtion was my "status" that one quarter/semester.

Why do you say I should say yes to this?

"Instead, academic probation was my "status" that one quarter/semester." So you WERE on academic probation (regardless of whether your institution considers it as a form of discipline), right..?

Yes, as I stated previously, I was put on academic probabtion. My institution, a highly esteemed institution, does not consider academic probabtion disciplinary action. The question AADSAS asks is if I have ever received disciplinary action and then says "e.g. Academic probabtion". So basically, AADSAS is equating academic probabtion to disciplinary action, but my institution where I was put on academic probabtion absolutely DOES NOT consider academic probabtion a form of disciplinary action.

This is why I am in a bit of a pickle. I spoke to a gentleman from AADSAS a week ago, and he stated that as long as my institution does not consider it disciplinary, then I should check no. I'm just here looking for other opinions.

I feel like if they want to know if people had ever been put on academic probabtion, why didn't they just ask this question?

I would say yes. If it was your status at one point, its in your file. Best-case scenario is you put "yes", explain it to your schools, and all is well. Worst-case scenario, you put "no" and all of your D schools interpret that as you lying on your application--immediately to the trash.

I appreciate your thought-out input.

I have copied and pasted the question to my University's advisors. I'm going to let them chew on how to interpret this.

I would say yes. AADSAS specifically gave the example of academic probation as a form of discipline; you were on academic probation.

Spoke with AADSAS again, and they specifically told me that this question is for disciplinary action in regards to an academic infraction. While AADSAS seems to give academic probation as an example of disciplinary action, my institution absolutely does not consider academic probation discipline because no academic infraction was committed and instead it was due to poor performance one quarter/semester. The AADSAS representative told me that becuase this was under the Academic Infraction section, these questions are in specifically in reference to academic infractions. I don't know how any reasonable person could consider poor performance an academic infraction. If poor performance = academic infraction, then everyone here would be guilty of an academic infraction at least one point in their lives. The AADSAS representative was very explicitly clear that this question is specific to having gotten in trouble for something. She informed me that this question is concerning something that would have lead to an academic record that could be investigated by schools. The representative informed me that if I have never committed any type of academic infraction and I have never been disciplined by my school, I should check "no."
My institution does not maintain a record of it because it was not disciplinary and there would not be anything about it on the transcript.

Looking at previous threads on SDN, it appears as though this application question is different from previous years. In previous years, their questions were MUCH more clear. It appears the question that I was asking about is an updated version of the below-listed question #1. This year they seem to have added academic probation as an example of an action that could be disciplinary, but the reason I was put on academic probation had nothing to do with disciplinary action because it was not related to an academic infraction.

1.) Have you ever been disqualified, suspended, dismissed, or otherwise subject to a disciplinary action at any college or university in connection with your academic performance?

After learning what I learned today, I feel comfortable checking "no" to this box.

Academic probation is the first step to kicking you out of school. It is definitely a serious thing, you should check with schools to see their take.

I think you should say yes and then explain it after. I would suggest calling the schools you're applying to and see how they view it. It doesn't matter if it was disciplinary or not, academic probation was directly listed as an example and you were on academic probation.

I would at least call the schools you're applying to and ask if this constitutes an "infraction"; despite what your university calls it, it sounds like an easy click of the button that would immediately discourage schools from looking at your app an further
