Any information regarding possible changes to the ADEX exams that were supposed to be administered in the coming months?

I am wondering about this, too. The d4s have residencies that they can fall back on. It is the current residents that need a license that have something to worry about.

Current word is that ADEX/WREB are exploring carious typodont teeth in lieu of live patient exams, both have beta tested/in process of testing the teeth already. Situation is evolving daily though.

Hopefully they are able to release a statement regarding the ADEX

how can they push this through when so many students have already taken the live patient based ADEX and some students have already taken the live patient based WREB. I see a lot of trouble with the states to change licensure criteria.

I agree, the issue will be getting each state to recognize this. They are exploring it, no final decision has been made.

Letter from WREB president states "We have established an internal work group to fast-track a non-patient based exam to potentially be implemented for this year where exceptional circumstances for state boards they might consider that as an option."

Otherwise, all the dates are just postponed until they can be rescheduled.

this, if accepted, is just a logistical nightmare. and as far as I know, anything that is rushed (aka fast-tracked) will end up being a nightmare as well.

by the time they push for individual states to accept this and change the law to grand license based on the "updated" licensure criteria, it will possibly be too late.

If this were to happen for WREB or ADEX (exams switching to full manikin), is it understood that it be open to only the people whose exams have been postponed or canceled indefinitely who have already paid? Or to all the graduates of 2020? Or to anyone in general who needs/wants to take the exam this year?

My backstory on why I am curious - I just officially graduated in Jan after my NBDE 2 success. (I have a post on it). Took CRDTS with my school in 2018 but wasn’t successful so I just held off on taking it again. I am starting a residency after 2 years not being in the dental environment and was hoping to taking licensing in 2021. But with this potential only manikin exam, I would like to take this. Would help me not worry about the patient search or just the awful stress of that live patient exam.

From my research and understanding

CRDTS has an All manikin exam (Perio, Restorative, Endo, Pros). They have this exam administered as early as this upcoming month (June 2020).
WREBs and ADEX only have manikins for Restorative, Endo, Pros; not a Perio/Scaling manikin component (which my state requires for licensure).

When I attended the NM dental board meeting, ADEX/CDCA said they had a perio manikin that will be approved and ready to go by July 1. A lot of states are waiving the perio portion or considering the WREB CTP section as sufficient to fulfill perio.

I will have to see if I can confirm your statement about the ADEX/CDCA Perio component and whether it applies to IL Licensure/Board, but definately thank you for the insight @cooliyak . My school is a site that administers ADEX/CDCA so I am really interested if I can avoid the headache/logistics of Live patient boards.

WREB confirmed that there is no Perio manikin component when I contacted them directly; but did mention "most state boards accept perio elements within the CTP exam as enough to recieve a license" which agrees with what you said.

IL accepts manikin ADEX for 2020 graduates, correct?

Yes @AONLINE , the "all manikin" ADEX exam (Endo, Prosth, Restorative Compudent exam) is acceptable for licensure for class of 2020 (please contact IL board directly if you want more accurate answers).

ADEX does NOT have a Perio / Scaling Manikin component, only Endo, Prosth, and Restorative Compudent Manikin component (haven't confirmed @cooliyak differing statement). But it doesn't matter since IL "waived" the Perio / Scaling component for class of 2020 from what I heard (again, please confirm with IL Board for more accurate info).
