Hello everyone,

I was wondering what is the official stance from the American Board of Surgery on ADHD? Is it okay to have the diagnosis and be treated for it or is it mandatory to report it to your patients/GME/Residency PD?

This is not something the ABS has a documented stance on. They are not in the business of residency placement or licensure and/or whether you share this information with your PD or the GME department. Your diagnosis is protected personal health information (such a HIV or Hep C status) and does not have to be revealed to patients.

Some licensing boards ask about all medical conditions, others that impact your ability to practice, and others which you are currently being treated for. You are advised however to be honest when questioned about health conditions which may affect your ability to function, or involve medications which may show up on a routine drug test.
