Members of democratic groups - what do you all pay your admin in the group? Is there an hourly rate, is it the same as a clinician? Thank you!

We have both hourly rates and a few stipended positions. The hourly rate is not as high as clinical time but we have adjusted it over the years as the clinical rate has increased.

Thanks! Follow up question if you are comfortable answering, what is the proportion of admin to clinical pay, and how did your group determine admin was worth less than clinical?

It varies. As a general rule, if the duties involve a significant number of hours and are routine then it tends to be a stipend. If not, it tends to be handled on an hourly basis.

Although the general rate is generally less than the average clinical rate, the actual compensation is essentially determined by "supply and demand." Every time I mention retirement, the rest of the group wants to add $25 to my effective admin hourly rate because no one else wants to do this stuff. Which gets back to supply and demand. If no one wants to handle this stuff, you have to raise the rate until someone does. If there are a lot of candidates, then you lower the rate until all but one drops out.

At least that is the theory. In reality, you set the rate so that the people you want to do the job accept, and the people who just think it is easy money will forget about it.

If you are looking for a ballpark-rate to start negotiations, ask around for what the hospital itself pays physicians for admin duties. Then add to that since in EM as opposed to other specialties you can easily spend that time earning more and easily quantify how much more.
