  1. Pre-Dental
So, i am a transfer student at UCLA and i finished community college with a 3.7 and i took my sciences at different schools because of scheduling conflicts. I took my ochems at one school, physics and general chemistrys at the same community college i graduated from and my biology's at a different college. My science GPA is a 3.65 (1 C in ochem 1, but an A in ochem 2). I am graduating UCLA this spring and i will finish with a 3.3 at UCLA. I am taking my DAT this month and hope i do well. I also will have 1 W on my transcript from this quarter because i need to drop one class that i don't need at all for credits or for my major (its irrelevant just time consuming). Does that look bad? I have plenty of hours of shadowing for a dentist but dont have research done at all. How is my GPA looked at when i am a transfer student? Do they look at my CC and my UCLA in one or separately and how do trends work into it? What are my chances just with my GPAs. And whats a good DAT that i should aim for to have a chance to get into schools?

i think you're right borderline. if u get a 20+ on your DAT, you will be golden. also try and get some actual volunteer assisting in, not just shadowing.

it's hard to determine what your "chances" are w/o an actual DAT score and which schools you're applying to. i echo the 20+ DAT, that UCLA GPA is significantly lower than the cc gpa so some adcoms might have an issue with the decreased trend. Other than that, if you apply broadly and early (and don't mind going oos), get a good dat, and write a good ps...you might be okay.

Your UCLA GPA is .4 lower than your CC GPA and that raises a red flag for most DS and this is a BIG deal. Make sure you rock DAT (22+ for every section) then you should be okay.

You are fine, scratch needing 22+ on every section of the DAT. Interviews are the most important part of the admissions process and your current GPA + a 19+ on the DAT will secure you some. A little luck never hurts.... I have seen stellar candidates (4.0 GPA and 22+ DAT) get over looked for a mediocre 3.2 GPA and 19 DAT candidate with a good attitude. Good luck.

These kind of statements bum me out, as it sort of applies to me.

At CC I had a 3.8

At the University I had a 3.2 - 3.3

I had some medical difficulties at the University, which explains the downward trend, but I'm sure the adcoms will never recognize this.

I just hope I have a decent chance despite this "unfavorable" appearance of only numbers :xf::scared:

ClassVII, I hope I have a lot of luck and I hope the adcoms can look over mere trends without considering circumstances.

I had about the same gpa when i finished my CC (higher when I finished my 4 yr though), BUT I didn't take any real sciences from a CC. It sounds as though you did???? If this is the case that will hurt! I know a lot of schools say not to spend much time a CC, (I THINK indicating NOT to take hard sciences from CC's, I could be wrong). Too me, it really is all up to your DAT, if you do well on the DAT then I think you got a great shot. If not, that along with a lot of CC work (to include sciences) could hurt. Best of luck to you!!

It's interesting to me CC is viewed so poorly - is this shared by the admission boards of d schools? or is it just assumed by those who have never attended CC? Would admissions not take into account the OP's 3.3 UCLA GPA as better than most other public univ reguardless of the number by extension of the same cc vs uni logic?

Like Hordel said, I think there is a lot of weight given to the DAT.

It's really the only truly objective field to measure prospective dental student's aptitude. It takes away the need for adcoms to meaningfully take into consideration GPA differences from various other schools.

While GPA is important, it seems only reasonable that the adcoms would more heavily consider DAT scores. Then again, may be I'm wrong. I know each school varies in what is gives more weight to.

I had some units from CC as well. I don't think it hurt me that much.

I also toook classes at a community college and recieved 2 C's, 4 B's and 1 A.. but now in the university I have a 3.81 Gpa. Now do dental schools look at that upward trend or can they only see the combined gpa from the two institutes?

I took every single pre-req at a CC (LAVC) and only took my major upper dev classes at UCSB after transfering. So you are fine if you do well on the DAT. I also had one W (at LAVC) but retook the class at Pierce.
